Minnesota has rewarded spread bettors much more consistently than it has won games. The Timberwolves are 4–3 outright but have covered six of seven, and Monday’s meeting with Milwaukee puts that distinction under a different kind of pressure. They’re a double-digit favorite against a Bucks team coming off two heavy defeats, so the question is whether Minnesota can turn its stronger defensive assessment into sustained separation.
Milwaukee needs to stop games from getting away
The Bucks lost 132–100 to Houston, then 136–111 to Cleveland on Saturday. They’re 1–5, with their only victory coming against Indiana, and have covered twice.
The Cleveland loss showed how quickly a competitive start could disappear. Milwaukee led 25–24 after one quarter, then gave up 48 points in the second and trailed by 26 at halftime, according to the AP account of the Cleveland loss. The Bucks shot 31% in the first half while Cleveland shot 62%.
Kel’el Ware scored 19 points, Tyler Herro had 15 and Kyle Kuzma added 14. There were contributions, but they couldn’t compensate for a quarter in which Cleveland more than doubled Milwaukee’s scoring.
That’s the immediate task for the Bucks: stay connected when the opponent makes a run. Their lone win was a 110–102 result against Indiana, a much more controlled game than the two losses that followed.
Minnesota’s supporting scorers supplied a response
The Timberwolves lost 121–111 at San Antonio on Saturday, but Ayo Dosunmu produced 27 points and nine rebounds. Jonathan Kuminga and Jaden McDaniels added 19 points each, per the AP report from San Antonio.
That report noted Minnesota was without Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert on Saturday. LaMelo Ball played only 20 minutes because of foul trouble and finished with 10 points before fouling out. Minnesota still put together a 16–0 first-half run after he went to the bench. That gives the Wolves a recent example of several players keeping the offense competitive through a disrupted night.
The result also checked some of the optimism from Friday’s 127–101 win over the Clippers. Minnesota has lost three of its last four games, even while covering three of those four. Competitive losses and a comfortable home win have both contributed to its strong betting record.
A bigger margin asks more of the favorite
The DraftKings spread makes Minnesota an 11.5-point favorite. Saturday’s cover came as a 12.5-point underdog, so simply extending the cover count would overlook a substantial change in what the team needs to deliver.

Our grades give Minnesota the stronger defense, B– compared with Milwaukee’s C. The offensive grades are both C–. That makes defensive control the clearer distinction in our assessment, rather than an assumption that the Wolves will overwhelm Milwaukee with superior scoring.
Our rebounding projections also put Minnesota at about 47 boards to Milwaukee’s 43. Dosunmu’s nine boards Saturday provided one recent contribution to that work. If Minnesota can finish defensive possessions with rebounds, it would have a firmer base for building a margin. Milwaukee can make that task harder by keeping the battle on the glass close.
Scoring trends pull against the defensive case
The total is 233.5. Minnesota’s last four games have gone Over, as have five of Milwaukee’s six this season. The Bucks’ last two losses show why a struggling offense can still be part of a high-scoring game when it allows 132 and 136 points.
Milwaukee’s defensive problems give Minnesota an opening to score. Still, with both offenses graded C– and the Wolves rated more highly on defense, there’s more to the total than the recent Over counts. Whether the Bucks can score steadily against that defense matters alongside how much they concede.
Minnesota’s case for a convincing win starts with the defensive advantage in our assessment and enough scoring from several players to sustain a lead. Its recent covers show competitiveness, but Monday asks the Wolves to create separation despite having lost three of four. Milwaukee’s best response starts with preventing another runaway quarter and keeping the rebounding contest close enough to support its scoring.
