Bulls vs. 76ers: Chicago needs cleaner possessions in Philadelphia

Chicago’s first job in Philadelphia is to stop making a difficult matchup harder with turnovers. The Bulls gave Boston repeated chances to turn mistakes into points in two recent losses, and now face a 76ers team off to a 6-1 start. Philadelphia has been finding ways to win, though its latest victories have been close enough to make Monday’s double-digit spread a separate question from which team has started better.

The Bulls need cleaner possessions

Chicago committed 16 turnovers that led to 21 Boston points in Friday’s 125-111 loss. Earlier that week, the Celtics turned 25 Bulls turnovers into 39 points in a 35-point win. That is a substantial amount of offense to give an opponent before considering anything else about the matchup.

Friday’s final margin also flattered Chicago’s competitiveness. Boston led by as many as 32 late in the first half, and the Bulls didn’t cut into the lead until the fourth quarter after the Celtics’ starters were out. Caleb Wilson scored 23 points, but Chicago shot 38% overall and 30% from three-point range.

Our turnover projections put the Bulls at about 14 turnovers and Philadelphia at about 10. That would leave a meaningful ball-security difference even with Chicago improving on its last two Boston games. For the Bulls, getting more possessions through to a shot is a practical first step toward staying competitive.

Philadelphia has been solving close games

Tyrese Maxey scored 38 points in Saturday’s 109-104 win at Charlotte. Anfernee Simons added 19 off the bench, helping Philadelphia recover from a seven-point deficit with five minutes left. The 76ers won despite making just 15 of 23 free throws, with LeBron James and Joel Embiid both sitting out that game.

That followed a 98-93 win over New York. Philadelphia’s last three victories have all come by five points, so its winning start hasn’t required blowing opponents away. That matters when judging what a strong record says about a much larger handicap.

The injury reports list Embiid as questionable with a foot issue for Monday. On Chicago’s side, Nic Claxton is doubtful with a hamstring injury, while Jalen Smith, with a finger issue, and Tobe Awaka, with an ankle issue, are probable.

The spread and the scoring outlook ask different questions

Philadelphia is an 11.5-point favorite in the DraftKings lines. Our grades rate the Sixers’ offense A+ and Chicago’s defense D-, a challenging combination for a Bulls team that has allowed at least 124 points in all six games this season. Chicago has lost four straight, although it covered the spreads in its last two defeats.

Those covers deserve the same context as Friday’s final score. A late reduction in a large deficit can matter to a spread result while offering less reassurance about the full performance. Philadelphia’s case starts with its offensive evaluation and Chicago’s repeated defensive problems; the counterweight is that the Sixers’ recent wins have been far tighter than Monday’s handicap.

The total is 239.5. Chicago’s repeated defensive problems support the higher-scoring case, but Philadelphia’s recent output pulls in another direction: it has scored 109, 98 and 114 in its last three games. Five of the Sixers’ seven games have gone Under their respective totals, as have four of Chicago’s six.

The Bulls’ scoring contribution remains part of that tension. They put up 127 against New York before Friday’s 111 in Boston, so their poor record hasn’t meant uniformly quiet offense. Cleaner possessions could help them contribute more, while continued mistakes would give Philadelphia opportunities to separate. Embiid’s questionable status adds uncertainty to that scoring assessment.

Chicago needs a better full-game performance, not just a more respectable finish. Philadelphia has the stronger record and offensive evaluation, but turning those advantages into a comfortable margin requires more than the late-game escapes that have sustained its recent run. Ball security is the clearest measure to watch alongside the centers’ availability.
