BYU vs. TCU Preview: Can the Cougars’ Ground Game Travel?

No. 10 BYU brings an unbeaten start and a clear rushing advantage to Fort Worth, but this matchup isn’t as simple as backing the team with the better record. TCU’s potential edge through the air gives the Horned Frogs a credible way to disrupt BYU’s preferred game script and challenge a spread that asks the Cougars to win comfortably on the road.

Two different paths to productive offense

BYU is 3-0 after a bye, while TCU is 2-2 following a conference loss to UCF, as outlined in this matchup report. Those records favor the Cougars, but the offensive contrast offers a more useful way to understand the matchup.

BYU’s strongest recent example came in a 41-23 win over Colorado State. LJ Martin rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Cougars finish with 559 total yards. That performance showed how quickly BYU can take control when Martin and the offensive line establish the ground game.

Our projections have BYU producing about 153 rushing yards, compared with roughly 119 for TCU. That gives the Cougars a straightforward route: build a reliable rushing base, stay ahead of the chains and avoid asking the passing game to carry the offense.

TCU’s route looks different. We project the Horned Frogs for approximately 276 passing yards and 395 total yards, while BYU checks in around 218 passing yards and 371 overall. That doesn’t settle the spread, but it explains why the home underdog can’t be dismissed. If Jaden Craig and the passing game turn that expected volume into sustained drives, TCU can force BYU away from its most comfortable style.

How the spread frames the matchup

BYU has covered in all three games this season, while TCU is 2-2 against the spread. The latest 6.5-point spread asks the Cougars to win by at least a touchdown to cover, which is a meaningful hurdle on the road. Yahoo Sports’ matchup report also notes that Fort Worth has historically been a difficult stop for BYU.

The tension is clear: BYU’s rushing production and early results support the favorite’s case, while TCU’s projected advantages in passing and total yardage create the counterweight. The team that controls the game’s shape should have the clearest path—BYU by leaning on Martin and managing the pace, or TCU by generating enough through the air to keep the Cougars from settling in.

Final assessment

BYU has the better early-season résumé and the matchup’s most established individual threat in Martin. TCU, however, has enough projected passing output to test this number if it finishes drives and prevents the Cougars from dictating the pace. More than either team’s record, that clash between BYU’s rushing efficiency and TCU’s ability to create through the air is the factor that matters most.
