BYU has done more than climb to No. 2 with a 6-0 record: the Cougars have covered the spread in all six games. Keeping that run going at UCF brings a different challenge after last weekend’s dramatic win over Notre Dame. The Knights are just 3-3, but they’ve covered four of six themselves—and BYU’s 6.5-point favorite status at DraftKings makes this a question of separation, not simply survival.
BYU’s big win came with some narrow escapes
Bear Bachmeier gave BYU several ways to score against Notre Dame. He threw for 224 yards, ran for two touchdowns, caught another and delivered the winning touchdown pass with 1:47 left in a 28-24 victory on Saturday. That’s a compelling demonstration of how difficult the Cougars can be to contain.
It wasn’t a clean getaway, though. A muffed punt return and failed fake punt helped Notre Dame back into the game, and BYU needed a final defensive stand. Those mistakes matter when evaluating a favorite giving nearly a touchdown: the Cougars showed they could recover, but also how quickly a comfortable position can disappear.
UCF’s latest game offers a similar warning about costly mistakes. Keyone Jenkins threw for 265 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-28 loss at Oklahoma State on October 10. The Knights were tied at halftime before a backward pass became a fourth-quarter fumble-return touchdown for the Cowboys. UCF has had an extra week between games; its last result showed passing production, even if it didn’t produce a win.
Where BYU can create separation
Our projections give BYU about 360 total yards to UCF’s 300, with a useful part of that difference on the ground: roughly 145 rushing yards for the Cougars versus 105 for the Knights. The rushing advantage gives BYU a potential route to more sustained production, though turning that yardage into a comfortable lead will still require cleaner execution than it managed against Notre Dame.
The betting history adds context without making UCF an automatic fade. Flat one-unit spread bets on BYU have returned a historical profit of 5.51 units across this season’s six games; the same approach on UCF has returned 1.71 units across six. Both teams have outperformed their earlier prices, so BYU’s perfect covering record alone doesn’t settle the current number.

A 43.5 total puts the defenses in focus
There’s support for a restrained scoring outlook at 43.5. We rate BYU’s defense highly at A-, with UCF’s earning a B, while our yardage projections suggest neither attack will pile up production. BYU also held TCU and Iowa State to 10 points apiece in the two games before facing Notre Dame.
The counterweight is what happened in the most recent outings. Jenkins produced four touchdown passes, Bachmeier scored in multiple ways, and both games featured mistakes that changed scoring opportunities. The total puts those defensive strengths up against demonstrated touchdown production and the possibility of short fields or a return score. Both teams have three overs and three unders through six games this season, so those results don’t supply a clear shortcut.
BYU has the stronger case for sustained production in our projections, particularly on the ground. UCF’s recent passing performance is the meaningful challenge to that case. For the spread, the key is whether BYU can turn its yardage advantage into separation without giving possessions back through the kinds of mistakes that tightened its last game. Those same mistakes matter to the total: stronger defenses can limit drives, but they can’t prevent every scoring opportunity created by a short field or a return.
