Boston built a 22-point lead against Milwaukee and still needed Derrick White to help settle the game late. Charlotte gave away a halftime lead in Brooklyn and lost for the fifth straight time. Those finishes put the focus on the same stretch of Friday’s matchup: when the offense gets harder to find, which team can keep its possessions from slipping away?
Boston’s record comes with a margin question
DraftKings makes Boston an 8.5-point favorite. The Celtics are 6–2, but they’ve covered only three of those eight games. Charlotte is 3–6 and has failed to cover in each of its five consecutive losses. The Hornets’ slump supports Boston’s favorite status; the Celtics’ own results make sustaining a comfortable lead a separate question.
In AP’s recap of Boston’s 109–102 win over Milwaukee, Paul George scored 25 points with five threes, while White added 24 points and seven assists. The Celtics led by 21 at halftime, then found themselves trailing in the fourth quarter before closing the game with a 12–5 run over the final three minutes.
George and White provided enough offense to recover, but Boston still had to rescue a game it had controlled. Against Charlotte, another extended scoring lull could keep the underdog involved even if the Celtics spend much of the night in front.
Jayson Tatum sat out Wednesday’s game for rest. He’s included in Boston’s projected lineup for Friday, though the starters remain unconfirmed. Payton Pritchard is questionable with an eye injury, according to Thursday’s report from Taylor Snow of the Celtics’ official site. His availability matters to an offense that had to find its late answers without him against Milwaukee.
Charlotte needs more than one hot scorer
Naz Reid gave the Hornets 28 points on 11-for-18 shooting in their 114–104 loss to Brooklyn. Grayson Allen added 22, according to AP’s account. Charlotte nevertheless lost a seven-point halftime lead, while the Nets finished at 51% from the field. Strong individual scoring wasn’t enough to carry the second half.
The Hornets have scored 104 points or fewer in all five games of their losing streak. Their immediate problem is finding enough reliable offense to make defensive stops count. Reid’s latest performance offers a counterweight to the slump, but Charlotte needs more of those possessions to work across the game.
Kon Knueppel has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Dennis Schroder and Moussa Diabate are questionable with thigh and quadriceps issues, respectively. Those Thursday reports add uncertainty around the group Charlotte can put alongside Reid and Miller; the projected starters are unconfirmed.

Boston’s Under streak meets a lower total
Six of Boston’s eight games this season have gone Under their game totals, including the last four. But the latest game produced 211 points, slightly more than Friday’s 209.5 threshold. An Under at one number isn’t automatically an Under at a lower one.
Charlotte’s last three games have all gone Over despite the Hornets scoring 104, 91 and 104 points. Opponents supplied 109, 124 and 114 in those games. Charlotte’s scoring difficulties tell only half the story for the total. Its opponents have scored enough to send those games Over anyway.
Boston’s ability to avoid the kind of lull Milwaukee exploited connects both markets. Steadier offense would help it build separation and contribute more to the total. For Charlotte, keeping the game close requires stops as well as more consistent scoring support around Reid and Brandon Miller.
Boston has shown it can finish games. The spread asks more of it: turn those strong stretches into an advantage that survives the scoring lulls. Charlotte’s recent offense makes that task look manageable, but Boston’s narrow escape against Milwaukee is a reason to separate winning from covering.
