Kansas City brings a 5-0 record to Seattle on Sunday night, but the 3-3 Seahawks are the favorites. That makes this matchup more interesting than a simple unbeaten-team test: can Seattle’s defense slow a Chiefs attack that just won with both Patrick Mahomes and Kenneth Walker III producing? Our analysis rates the Seahawks’ defense as the strongest unit in this game, while their latest loss shows why stopping Kansas City may only solve half the problem.
Seattle’s defense has a two-part assignment
The latest DraftKings spread makes Seattle a three-point favorite. Our grades offer a football reason to take that matchup seriously despite the difference in records: we give Seattle’s defense an A+, against an A for Kansas City’s offense with Mahomes at quarterback.
The Chiefs aren’t coming in dependent on the passing game alone. Walker ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns, while Mahomes threw for 272 yards in Sunday’s 22-6 win over the Chargers. That balance gives Kansas City more than one way to challenge Seattle, although the Chiefs also struggled in short-yardage situations in that win.
There are important Thursday practice updates around Mahomes' receiving options. Rashee Rice didn’t practice because of hamstring/knee issues, and Travis Kelce was limited with an ankle injury. Both sit atop Kansas City’s depth chart at their positions, making their availability worth watching as the game approaches.
The Seahawks need more from their possessions
Seattle’s last outing was a reminder that gaining yards and finishing drives aren’t the same thing. The Seahawks outgained Denver 353-168 but lost 17-14 in overtime last Thursday. Sam Darnold took five sacks and threw two interceptions, including the overtime turnover that set up Denver’s winning field goal.
That puts protection and ball security at the center of Seattle’s case as a favorite. Our analysis still rates its offense an A- with Darnold, against a B+ Kansas City defense. But Seattle’s results against the spread show just one cover in six games this season, with three losses and two pushes. Its 3-3 record doesn’t tell the whole betting story, and neither does the defensive grade.

What matters at a total of 42.5
The posted total of 42.5 brings the same tension into focus. Seattle’s highly rated defense and the practice limitations around Kansas City’s receivers could make sustained scoring harder. Yet both attacks have shown they can produce: the Chiefs scored at least 24 points in each of their first four games, and Seattle scored between 29 and 31 in three straight games before the Denver loss. Seattle also allowed 33 points to Washington and 32 to San Francisco in that stretch, a useful counterweight to its strong defensive grade.
Our total-yard projections put Kansas City at about 330 yards and Seattle at about 337, a fairly close production outlook rather than a large yardage gap. Seattle’s Denver game shows why the next question is what happens to those possessions. Sacks and turnovers can leave substantial yardage with little scoring to show for it; Kansas City’s recent short-yardage struggles offer another potential obstacle. This season’s totals results are mixed, too: three of five Chiefs games finished under, while Seattle split its six games evenly.
The matchup to keep in focus
Seattle’s defense supplies the clearest matchup argument for its favorite status, but the Seahawks need cleaner possessions to make that strength count. Kansas City’s counterweight is an attack that can lean on Walker as well as Mahomes. With our yardage outlook so close, Seattle’s ability to protect Darnold and avoid drive-ending mistakes matters more than the difference in records. That’s the strongest test of its case as a favorite—and a key uncertainty around the 42.5 total.
