Cowboys vs. Eagles preview: Can Dallas get its passing game back on track?

Dallas has the stronger passing outlook, but turning that advantage into points is the bigger challenge against Philadelphia. Both teams are 2-4, and the Cowboys arrive after scoring just 29 points across two straight losses. The Eagles offer another difficult defensive test—even as their own struggling offense faces uncertainty around several key contributors.

Dallas needs more than passing volume

The Cowboys are 4.5-point favorites at DraftKings. With Dak Prescott leading an offense we grade A, Dallas has the better tools to move the ball in our analysis. Our team projections put the Cowboys at roughly 360 total yards, compared with about 300 for Philadelphia, with the larger advantage coming through the air.

Last Sunday showed why yardage alone won’t settle this matchup. Prescott threw for 258 yards on 54 attempts in a 23-13 loss at Green Bay, but two second-quarter interceptions ended possessions inside the Packers’ 30. Dallas didn’t score a touchdown until the final minute. That followed a 24-16 loss to Tampa Bay.

Philadelphia’s defense earns an A in our grades, making it the strongest counterweight to the Cowboys’ favored status. Dallas has CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens in its receiving group, but the recent results make this less about whether Prescott can accumulate completions and more about whether Dallas can finish promising drives without costly mistakes.

Philadelphia’s offensive support matters

Tanner McKee leads an Eagles offense we grade C against a Dallas defense that also earns a C. That gives Philadelphia a plausible route to staying competitive: its offense is facing the less highly rated defense in this matchup. Still, McKee went 26 of 45 for 215 yards and one touchdown as the Eagles lost 25-14 to Carolina on Sunday. Philadelphia’s four-game losing streak has included no more than 20 points in any game.

Friday’s practice reports add meaningful uncertainty around McKee’s supporting cast. DeVonta Smith didn’t practice because of a hamstring injury, Dallas Goedert sat out with a knee injury, and Dontayvion Wicks missed practice with an ankle injury. Saquon Barkley was limited by a hamstring injury. Those updates don’t establish who will miss Monday’s game, but the availability of those offensive contributors matters to Philadelphia’s chances of improving on its recent scoring.

What that means for the 44.5-point total

The scoring evidence pulls in both directions. Four of Dallas’ six games this season have gone over their posted totals, yet its past two stayed under as the offense struggled. Philadelphia’s recent scoring drought and Friday’s practice absences raise concerns about its contribution, while its highly rated defense could make Dallas work harder for points.

The counterweight is the Cowboys’ defense: our C grade leaves room for the Eagles to improve on those recent outputs. At this total, Dallas’ stronger passing outlook supports a scoring rebound, but Philadelphia’s defense and the Cowboys’ recent wasted possessions make that far from straightforward. How much support McKee has around him matters just as much to the scoring outlook.

Dallas has the clearer offensive case, but Philadelphia’s defense makes the favorite’s task more demanding than the matching records suggest. The most useful test is whether Prescott can turn promising possessions into points rather than another high-attempt, low-return night. That improvement would strengthen Dallas’ case against the spread; for the total, it still has to be weighed alongside an Eagles offense that has struggled for four games and has several important players dealing with injuries.
