The Cubs have the better record and the more imposing lineup, but Sunday’s matchup with the Reds could hinge on how much stability either starting pitcher provides.
Chicago enters at 86-69 after beating Cincinnati 5-2 on Saturday, while the Reds are 72-83. First pitch is scheduled for 1:40 p.m. EDT on September 20 at Great American Ball Park. The forecast calls for partly sunny conditions and a temperature around 83 degrees.
Chicago’s lineup creates the separation
The Cubs’ strongest case starts with their bats. An AP recap of Saturday’s win noted that Chicago had reached an MLB-leading 214 home runs. Michael Busch hit the go-ahead homer, while Seiya Suzuki contributed an RBI single.
Busch and Suzuki join Pete Crow-Armstrong, Alex Bregman and Ian Happ in a deep top five. Our projections give the Cubs about nine hits and 15 total bases, compared with roughly eight hits and 13 total bases for Cincinnati. The gap isn’t enormous, but it gives Chicago more potential ways to build an inning.
Recent results lean the same way without making the Cubs look invulnerable. Chicago is 5-5 over its last 10 games, while Cincinnati is 3-7. The Reds have already pushed back in this series, winning Friday’s game 6-4 before the Cubs answered Saturday.
The starters add uncertainty to the price
David Peterson starts for Chicago against Rhett Lowder. The available pitcher props set Peterson’s outs line at 15.5 and Lowder’s at 14.5, giving neither starter an especially long workload expectation.
That matters because Chicago is a -163 moneyline favorite in the latest DraftKings odds, with Cincinnati at +134. The Cubs have the stronger record and projected hitting output, but that price becomes less comfortable if Peterson struggles to work efficiently or Lowder avoids early traffic.
The 9.5-run total adds a useful secondary lens. Six of Chicago’s last 10 games went over their listed totals, with two unders and two pushes. Cincinnati had four overs, four unders and two pushes. Chicago’s hitting outlook creates scoring upside, but the market is already asking for a productive afternoon, making the opening innings especially important.

Cincinnati’s path is fairly direct: keep the top of Chicago’s order from creating immediate pressure, then get production from Dane Myers, Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart at the front of its own lineup. The Reds don’t need to match Chicago’s season-long power if they can turn this into a shorter game decided by a few high-leverage plate appearances.
Final assessment
Chicago’s lineup depth, superior record and projected edge in hits and total bases explain the moneyline gap. Cincinnati’s counterweight is a home matchup in which limited starter workload expectations could bring both bullpens into play relatively early.
Lowder’s ability to handle the top five Cubs hitters is the key. If he limits baserunners and keeps the ball in the park, Cincinnati can make the price uncomfortable. If Chicago creates traffic early, its deeper lineup should have more chances to turn that pressure into a decisive inning.
