Diamondbacks vs. Padres Preview: Arizona’s Urgency Meets San Diego’s Strong Form

The biggest question in Sunday’s season finale is whether Arizona’s urgency and Michael Soroka’s stronger season numbers can overcome a San Diego club that’s playing its best baseball at the right time. The Diamondbacks have a clear path to making their road-favorite case, but the matchup looks tighter than the incentive gap might suggest.

Very different stakes in the finale

Arizona enters Sunday one game behind Philadelphia for the National League’s final wild-card spot and holds the tiebreaker. The Diamondbacks need to win and get help elsewhere. San Diego, meanwhile, secured the NL’s No. 4 seed with Saturday’s 10-7 victory and will host the Cubs in the Wild Card Series.

That setup shouldn’t be mistaken for proof that San Diego will ease off. The Padres are 8-2 across their last 10 games, while Arizona is 6-4 over the same span. The teams have also split the first two games of this series, with the Diamondbacks winning 11-4 before the Padres answered Saturday.

Soroka gives Arizona a credible path

The starting-pitching matchup favors Soroka on season ERA. He enters at 9-5 with a 3.31 ERA, compared with Randy Vásquez’s 10-6 record and 4.01 ERA. That gives Arizona a reasonable run-prevention argument in a game where avoiding early damage could be especially valuable.

The hitting outlook offers much less separation. Our projections have both clubs around eight hits and 13 total bases, with roughly one home run apiece. That near-even profile is a useful counterweight to the idea that the favorite should control the game simply because its season is on the line.

Gabriel Moreno is also day-to-day with a hamstring issue. He went 1-for-3 with a walk Saturday before Arizona used a pinch hitter when his spot came up in the ninth, making his status relevant to a lineup trying to extend its season.

How the market frames it

The latest moneyline makes Arizona a -135 road favorite. Soroka’s season numbers and the Diamondbacks’ circumstances make that price understandable, but San Diego’s recent form, home field and comparable projected hitting output keep the matchup competitive.

The total is eight after the first two games of the series produced 15 and 17 runs. Six of each team’s last 10 games went over their respective totals, though this pitching matchup and the modest home-run projections offer a real counterweight to simply extending that run-scoring trend into Sunday.

Final assessment

Arizona brings the more pressing need and the better starter ERA, while San Diego counters with the stronger recent record and an offense our projections view as essentially even with the Diamondbacks. The key is whether Soroka can turn Arizona’s clearest statistical edge into a clean start; if he can’t, the Padres have shown enough at the plate to erase much of the apparent gap between the teams.
