Ducks vs. Flames preview: Can Calgary interrupt Anaheim’s scoring surge?

Anaheim keeps finding enough offense to survive games that refuse to settle down. Calgary arrives with a very different recent experience: two straight games in which neither team scored more than twice. That makes Friday’s Ducks–Flames meeting a test of whether Calgary can interrupt Anaheim’s scoring surge, especially when Cutter Gauthier gets a chance on the power play. The Ducks’ three straight wins are compelling, but their defensive results leave Calgary a way into the game.

Gauthier gives Calgary a concrete problem

Gauthier scored again and added an assist in Thursday’s 5–4 win at Edmonton. As AP reported via ESPN, that gave him nine goals across four games, including seven on the power play. Beckett Sennecke and Pavel Mintyukov each contributed two goals and an assist against the Oilers, so the latest win also had important scoring beyond Gauthier.

The broader run is just as striking: Anaheim has scored at least five goals in each of its last six games. Yet the Ducks have allowed at least three in all six, and that stretch includes two losses. The Ducks have been scoring their way out of trouble, with little room for the attack to cool off.

That distinction matters for Calgary. Keeping Gauthier away from extra-man chances would attack a specific source of Anaheim’s recent production. It would still leave the Flames needing to contain the other contributors who helped turn the Edmonton game into another high-scoring win.

Calgary’s price needs more than a quiet night

DraftKings lists Calgary at -130 on the moneyline, with Anaheim at +110. The Flames are therefore priced as the favorite even though Anaheim brings the winning streak. Calgary has won six of its last 10 games, compared with four for Anaheim, which helps put the Ducks’ latest burst in perspective. The challenge for the favorite is turning that steadier ten-game record into an answer to Anaheim’s current attack.

The Flames’ latest game shows what a close, low-scoring contest can still demand of their offense. In Wednesday’s 2–1 overtime loss at Seattle, Dustin Wolf made 27 saves and Yegor Sharangovich supplied Calgary’s only goal, according to AP’s recap on ESPN. Calgary had beaten San Jose 2–1 in its previous game. Wolf kept them close in Seattle, but one goal left almost no margin for error.

Our team grades capture the same tension: Calgary’s defense is C+ against Anaheim’s C-, while Anaheim’s offense is B- against Calgary’s D-. For the Flames, slowing the game addresses only half the task. They also need to turn Anaheim’s defensive vulnerability into scoring. For the Ducks, another productive night must come with enough stops to make it count.

The total turns on chances and saves

The total is 6.5 goals. Anaheim’s last six games all went over their respective totals, while six of Calgary’s last 10 stayed under. The streaks reflect each game’s line. For Friday, the question is whether Calgary can keep the score closer to its last two games or gets pulled into the exchanges Anaheim has been winning.

Our shot projections put Anaheim around 30 and Calgary around 28, with roughly three power-play opportunities apiece. That doesn’t suggest a huge separation in shot volume, and volume alone can’t tell us how dangerous those chances will be. Gauthier’s recent extra-man production makes the quality of those power-play chances particularly relevant.

Wolf and Lukas Dostal are the projected goalies, with neither confirmed. Wolf has allowed five goals across his latest three completed appearances. Dostal had a .864 save percentage in a five-appearance sample ending October 27. That older sample doesn’t describe his play during Anaheim’s current winning streak, so the goalie matchup offers no simple extension of the teams’ recent scores.

Calgary needs discipline to limit Gauthier’s extra-man chances and enough offense to make a quieter game pay off. Anaheim has scoring beyond Gauthier, but its defensive results make another offensive surge feel necessary. The key distinction is whether the Flames can slow the Ducks and capitalize when they do, rather than simply keep the score close.
