Ducks vs. Flyers: Can Philadelphia’s revival hold up against Anaheim’s shooting edge?

Philadelphia has finally found a winning rhythm, while Anaheim is trying to recover the scoring touch that helped it start strong. The Flyers bring three straight wins into Saturday’s matchup, and the Ducks arrive with five straight losses. That makes Philadelphia’s modest favorite status easy to understand—but our projections give Anaheim a meaningful edge in shots. The interesting question is whether the Flyers’ recent improvement can hold up if their goalie faces the heavier workload we expect.

The streaks tell only part of the story

The DraftKings moneyline prices—Philadelphia at -122 and Anaheim at +102—leave a fairly narrow gap between teams heading in opposite directions. Anaheim’s five-game skid followed a 4-1-0 start, while Philadelphia’s three wins came after an 0-6-3 opening.

The clearest change in the Flyers’ recent results is that three goals have been enough each night during their winning streak: they’ve beaten Ottawa 3-1, Colorado 3-2 and Buffalo 3-1. Anaheim has scored just nine goals across its five consecutive losses, including a 4-1 defeat at New Jersey on Thursday. The Ducks need more than a change in results; they need their attack to produce again.

There’s a reasonable case for that improvement. Our shot projections put Anaheim at about 30 to Philadelphia’s 26, and our offensive grades favor the Ducks, B to D. The extra shooting volume gives Anaheim a plausible route to a rebound, though it doesn’t establish that its chances will be better. The counterweight is at the other end: we grade the Ducks’ team defense D+ and Philadelphia’s C.

The goalie matchup complicates a 5.5 total

If Joseph Woll and Lukas Dostal get the starts, their recent goalie performances offer a useful contrast. Woll has a .912 save percentage across his last five appearances for Philadelphia this season; Dostal is at .862 across his last five for Anaheim. Woll allowed two goals in each of his two most recent appearances. That gives Philadelphia the stronger recent goaltending foundation, even with fewer shots expected from its own attack.

The posted total is 5.5. Philadelphia’s games have gone Under in 10 of 12 outings this season, returning 7.47 units from flat one-unit Under bets at those historical prices. Anaheim’s scoring struggles and Woll’s recent work strengthen the low-scoring case, but today’s threshold leaves less room than the 6.5 totals posted for Philadelphia’s two most recent wins. The Ducks’ weaker defensive assessment and Dostal’s recent results are meaningful counterweights, too: Philadelphia may not need a large shot count to contribute to a higher-scoring game. The Flyers’ Under record is useful context, not evidence that every past result came against a comparable total.

There are also defensive availability questions worth watching. Anaheim’s Pavel Mintyukov was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. For Philadelphia, Rick Tocchet said Friday he wasn’t sure whether Cam York could play Saturday, while Rasmus Ristolainen was a possibility, as reported by Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia. Both Flyers defensemen are dealing with upper-body injuries.

What matters most

Philadelphia’s revival has come through enough scoring paired with much tighter results, rather than an offensive surge. Anaheim’s stronger attacking assessment and projected shooting volume give the Ducks a credible response, but Woll’s recent form offers a reason that extra volume might not undo the Flyers’ progress if he starts. The key is whether Philadelphia can keep conceding so little while allowing the larger shot count we project. At a narrow moneyline price and a 5.5 total, its three-game winning streak matters—but the contrast between Anaheim’s shooting outlook and the recent goalie results is more useful than either streak alone.
