Virginia has the stronger defense in our grades, but can its offense give it enough help against Duke? The Cavaliers have finished below 300 yards in three straight games, while the Blue Devils arrive after consecutive losses decided by a combined seven points. With Virginia a 1.5-point favorite at DraftKings, an offensive rebound for the Cavaliers—or better late-game execution from Duke—could make the difference in a tight matchup.
Virginia’s defensive edge comes with a catch
Our grades give Virginia’s defense a B+, the strongest unit grade in this matchup, while both offenses and Duke’s defense receive a B. That gives the Cavaliers a useful strength in a game with such a short spread. The harder part is finding enough production with the ball.
Virginia lost 23-13 at SMU on Saturday and managed only 258 yards. Quarterback Beau Pribula completed 13 of 22 passes for 137 yards and scored the Cavaliers’ only touchdown on a 1-yard run. On the other side, Virginia allowed a 59-yard catch that helped set up one touchdown and a 37-yard touchdown reception later in the game. Those costly gains made its limited offensive output harder to overcome.
Our yardage projections offer a more encouraging outlook for Virginia: roughly 380 total yards, including 220 through the air and 160 on the ground. That would be a substantial improvement on Saturday’s performance. It also identifies the biggest question behind the spread: can Virginia turn that expected rebound into sustained drives rather than another game of relying heavily on its defense?
Duke has been close, but hasn’t finished
Duke’s latest loss was especially frustrating. The Blue Devils took the lead against North Carolina with 4:29 remaining, then allowed the winning touchdown with 1:53 left in a 24-20 defeat on Saturday. Nate Sheppard contributed 77 rushing yards and another 98 on 11 catches, showing how much he could provide even when the running game wasn’t breaking loose.
The Blue Devils have covered four of their six games this season, but both failures came in their last two outings. Their earlier success matters; so does losing late leads in consecutive games. Against Virginia’s stronger defensive grade, our projections put Duke at about 190 passing yards and 150 rushing yards. Sheppard’s production as both a runner and receiver gives Duke a practical route to moving the ball, though another close game would put its late-game execution back under scrutiny.

Why 47.5 deserves a closer look
The posted total of 47.5 brings Virginia’s offensive struggles into focus. Cavaliers games have gone under in 11 of 14 games over the past year, producing a historical profit of 7.03 units from flat one-unit under bets. The current-season picture is less pronounced: four unders in seven games. Duke’s six games this season have split evenly between overs and unders.
There’s also an important threshold distinction: Virginia’s last three games carried totals of 51.5, 49.5 and 51.5. The lower number for this matchup leaves less room for the same scoring struggles to produce another under. Virginia’s defensive grade and recent offensive results support a restrained scoring outlook, but our projected yardage rebound for the Cavaliers is a meaningful counterweight. Sheppard’s receiving production also gives Duke another way to move the ball if rushing yards are hard to find.
The key is Virginia’s offensive response
Virginia’s defensive advantage is the clearest unit-level strength here, but its offense needs to do more than it has over the past three games to make that advantage count. Duke’s close losses and Sheppard’s versatility make the Blue Devils a credible challenge, even with their recent trouble protecting late leads. For bettors weighing the short spread and 47.5 total, the most useful distinction is between another sub-300-yard Virginia performance and the rebound our projections anticipate. Sustained Cavaliers drives would strengthen their case against the spread while challenging a simple repeat of their under-heavy history.
