Flames vs. Canucks Preview: Vancouver’s Scoring Comes With a Catch

Vancouver has scored 13 goals through two games—and allowed 14. That’s plenty of entertainment, but little breathing room for a team with one win to show for it. Calgary arrives needing a response to a 6-1 opening loss, yet our projections give the Flames a modest edge in shots. With the moneyline evenly priced, the question is whether Vancouver’s scoring can carry it again or whether Calgary can put enough pressure on the Canucks to expose the other half of their early results.

Vancouver’s goals tell only half the story

The Canucks’ first two games were a 6-5 win over Edmonton and a 9-7 loss to the same opponent. Their scoring has kept them competitive, but conceding 14 goals leaves little margin for a quieter night from the forwards.

Calgary’s opener was rough at both ends, with Seattle winning 6-1. Still, our defensive grades give the Flames a C+ compared with Vancouver’s D-. That gives Calgary a stronger assessment in that part of the matchup, even though its six-goal concession shows how far the opening performance fell short.

An even moneyline, with a small shot edge

DraftKings’ evenly priced moneyline makes neither team the favorite. Vancouver’s early goal production is the clearest positive in the recent results, but its goals allowed help explain why the scoring headline isn’t enough to separate these teams.

Our shot projections put Calgary at roughly 28 and Vancouver at 26. It’s a modest difference, but it offers the Flames a route into the game: put more pucks on net and make Vancouver answer at both ends. Calgary still needs better finishing than it showed against Seattle.

The 6.5 total adds a scoring lens after Vancouver’s two high-scoring games. Our offensive grades, though, are D for Calgary and D- for Vancouver. That contrast makes the Canucks’ early production worth watching rather than simply carrying it forward as the expectation.

What matters most

Vancouver has shown it can produce goals, but keeping them out is the bigger obstacle to turning that production into a steadier performance. Calgary’s modest projected shot edge and stronger defensive grade provide a counterweight, while its opener is a reminder that those advantages still need to show up on the ice. At an even moneyline, Vancouver’s ability to limit Calgary’s chances matters more than the raw goal count from its first two games.
