Calgary finally has something to build on after earning its first win, but Thursday’s visit to Vegas asks a tougher question: was that breakthrough the start of a better stretch, or just relief from a rough opening? The Golden Knights are 6-2 and heavily favored. Still, our projections suggest a nearly even split in shots, making Calgary’s ability to build on its improved scoring and goaltending more interesting than the lopsided moneyline alone suggests.
A breakthrough, not yet a turnaround
The Flames beat Anaheim 4-2 on Tuesday, with Martin Pospisil scoring the go-ahead goal late in the third period and Yegor Sharangovich adding an empty-netter. It was a welcome finish after five straight losses to open the season. Calgary has scored 12 goals across those six games, so one productive night still leaves plenty for the attack to prove.
Vegas comes in after beating Nashville 5-2 on Tuesday. William Karlsson scored the go-ahead goal, while Jack Eichel, Tomas Hertl, Trevor Connelly and Brett Howden also scored. Calgary now has to build on its breakthrough against a team that just got goals from five different players.
Vegas has the stronger case—and an expensive price
DraftKings’ current moneyline has Vegas at -310 and Calgary at +250. The Golden Knights’ start fits their favorite status, but backing the stronger team and finding an attractive price are different decisions. Flat one-unit moneyline bets on Vegas across its eight games this season would have returned a profit of 1.28 units, even with six wins. That’s useful historical context for how much the price matters.
Our shot projections put Calgary at about 28 and Vegas at about 29. That’s a narrow gap in expected shooting volume, with room for very different chance quality and finishing. Calgary’s route to a competitive game needn’t depend on a huge shot advantage; making more of those opportunities matters more than simply keeping the shot count close.
The goalie contrast complicates the total
If Dustin Wolf and Carter Hart get the starts, their recent goalie performances offer a meaningful contrast. Wolf has an .839 save percentage across his four appearances this season, though he allowed only two goals in his latest outing. Hart has a .906 save percentage across his five most recent appearances for Vegas this season. Those are small samples, but Wolf’s latest result gives Calgary something more encouraging than his overall numbers.

At a total of 6.5, the tension is between Calgary’s scoring struggles and its difficulty keeping opponents off the board. Vegas has scored 30 goals in eight games, giving that concern more substance than Tuesday’s five-goal performance alone. Wolf’s early results leave room for Vegas to drive the scoring, while Hart’s stronger recent numbers and Calgary’s two-goal-per-game output could limit the Flames’ contribution. The nearly even shot projections leave that contrast intact: similar volume can produce very different results when finishing and saves differ.
What matters most
Vegas brings the more convincing body of work, including a scoring record that makes Calgary’s defensive improvement especially important. The steep moneyline already asks bettors to pay for that advantage, though, and the shot projections don’t point to a large volume gap. If Wolf starts, Calgary’s most credible path is to pair another improved night from him with an attack that builds on Tuesday rather than slipping back toward its opening struggles. That combination—not merely matching Vegas in shots—is what would make the Flames’ rebound meaningful here.
