Flames vs. Kraken Preview: Can Seattle Take Away Calgary’s Power Play?

Calgary scored on both power plays in Friday’s 6–2 win over Seattle. The Flames have scored twice in each of their two games since, so keeping them off the power play is a good place for the Kraken to start in Wednesday’s rematch.

Seattle needs to make Calgary score at even strength

Matt Coronato had a goal and three assists Friday, and Joel Farabee added a goal and two assists. Through that game, Calgary had scored on nine of 20 power plays over seven games, and Seattle had given up 10 goals while shorthanded 17 times over six games, according to the Associated Press recap. Fewer penalties mean fewer chances for Coronato and the Flames to settle in and move the puck with an extra skater.

DraftKings had Seattle at −135 and Calgary at +114 on the moneyline at 11:02 a.m. ET Wednesday. Seattle won both opening-week meetings 6–1, so it has already shown it can put pressure on Calgary. The Flames also showed they can win a tight game on the road, though. Fourth-line wingers Adam Klapka and William Strömgren scored and Dustin Wolf made 26 saves in Monday’s 2–1 win at San Jose, per the AP recap. Wolf is a possible starter Wednesday. If he gets the nod and Calgary gets another goal from its depth, Seattle may need to create rebounds and second chances to make home ice count.

The rematch needs seven goals to go over

DraftKings had the over at +110 and the under at −130 on 6.5 goals in the same snapshot. Each of the three meetings this season has reached at least seven goals. Friday got to eight in part because Calgary converted both power plays, while Wolf stopped 20 of 22 shots at the other end.

Monday’s game in San Jose showed how different the scoring can look when Wolf can protect a small lead. If Seattle takes an early penalty, watch whether it can get to loose pucks and send them out of the zone before Calgary sets up again. A clean kill makes the Flames work for their goals at even strength. If Calgary’s power play gets going and Seattle can answer, there’s a clearer path to seven.
