Texas and Florida both need a rebound, but Saturday’s matchup asks more of the Longhorns than simply getting back into the win column. No. 7 Texas is a 10.5-point favorite against a Florida team coming off two lopsided losses. The interesting question is whether Texas can turn its strengths into a comfortable win after turnovers and a special-teams breakdown helped derail it against Oklahoma.
Texas has the advantage—and some cleanup to do
The Longhorns lost 27-24 to Oklahoma on Saturday despite holding the Sooners to 238 total yards. Arch Manning threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns, but his two interceptions included a pick-six and a late turnover that set up the winning field goal. Oklahoma also scored on a blocked punt. That’s important context: the final score wasn’t simply a case of Texas getting outplayed by Oklahoma’s offense.
Our grades still favor Texas on both sides of the ball, with A+ evaluations for its offense and defense. Florida earns an A- on offense and an A on defense, so our assessment hasn’t written off the Gators despite their recent results. Still, Florida needs a much better performance than it delivered against South Carolina.
The Gamecocks beat Florida 38-19 on Saturday, a week after Missouri handed the Gators a 45-17 loss. Against South Carolina, Aaron Philo turned the ball over twice, Jadan Baugh managed 59 yards on 15 carries, and LaNorris Sellers threw four touchdown passes. Florida’s route to a competitive game starts with steadier possessions and fewer openings for the opposing quarterback.
Winning and covering have been different stories
Texas is 4-1, but it has covered the spread just once in five games this season. Flat one-unit spread bets on its opponents would have returned a historical profit of 2.54 units. That gap between winning and rewarding favorite backers is useful context for a double-digit spread, especially with the Longhorns having scored between 20 and 30 points in each of their last four games.
Our passing-yard projections give Texas about 240 yards to Florida’s 200, while the rushing outlook is much closer: roughly 120 yards for Texas and 125 for Florida. The clearer projected separation comes through the air. Manning’s three-touchdown outing offers encouragement, but his interceptions also show how quickly productive passing can lose its value when possessions end badly.

What matters at a total of 51.5
Florida’s recent defensive struggles give the scoring outlook an obvious upward push. The counterweight is Texas’ defensive performance against Oklahoma: two Sooners touchdowns came from defense and special teams, not sustained offensive drives. Meanwhile, Florida has scored only 17 and 19 points in its last two games. At DraftKings’ total of 51.5, the Gators’ ability to contribute offensively matters alongside whether Texas can exploit their recent pass-defense problems.
The strongest case for Texas is its favorable matchup through the air and a defense that limited Oklahoma’s production. The main concern is execution: costly errors have kept the Longhorns from turning solid stretches into dependable separation. Florida’s recent play makes a rebound difficult, but Texas needs cleaner possessions—not just another productive passing day—to make this a convincing response.
