J.J. McCarthy gave the Giants a late spark last Sunday. Now comes the harder part: sustaining it against a Houston defense we rate highly. New York has the better record, but the Texans are 10.5-point favorites at DraftKings. McCarthy’s ability to turn an impressive relief appearance into consistent production is central to whether the Giants can stay competitive as a much bigger underdog.
A promising finish meets a difficult matchup
McCarthy threw for 243 yards in just over 11 minutes as the Giants nearly erased a huge deficit in their 34-27 loss to New Orleans. His final fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the end zone. New York has since named him the starter against Houston, making that late rally more than a footnote to last week’s loss.
There’s still a substantial difference between that burst and a full afternoon against the Texans. Our grades give Houston an A+ on defense compared with New York’s C. Both offenses receive a B with C.J. Stroud and McCarthy at quarterback, so the clearest separation in our assessment is on the other side of the ball.
Our passing-yards projections put the Giants at about 180 yards, compared with roughly 240 for Houston. We also project about 300 total yards for New York and 340 for the Texans. That frames McCarthy’s challenge: New York needs sustained production, not just another frantic finish. Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely lead the Giants’ depth chart at wide receiver and tight end, giving him two prominent targets to look for.
Houston’s improvement still has a counterweight
The Texans have won two straight after an 0-4 start. Stroud completed 24 of 34 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns in their 34-31 win over Jacksonville at Wembley. He also recovered from a late end-zone interception to lead the drive for Ka’imi Fairbairn’s winning field goal.
That’s a strong recent case for Houston, but winning and covering a double-digit spread are different demands. The Giants have covered in four of their six games this season, while the Texans have covered in two of six. Houston’s defensive grade supports its position as the favorite; allowing 31 points last Sunday is the immediate reminder that its results haven’t always matched that assessment.

What matters at a total of 42.5
The scoring picture has competing forces. Houston’s defensive strength and New York’s modest passing projection put pressure on the Giants’ contribution to the 42.5-point total. On the other hand, Stroud just delivered a productive passing day, and New York has allowed 24, 27 and 34 points in its past three games. Four of the Giants’ six games this season have gone over their respective totals. Houston’s six games have split evenly between overs and unders, offering less of a consistent scoring pattern.
Houston’s skill-position practice updates also deserve attention. Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reported that starting running back David Montgomery missed Wednesday’s practice with a groin injury and starting tight end Dalton Schultz returned Thursday after a quadriceps issue. Their participation matters to the personnel around Stroud, though neither report establishes a Sunday game designation.
Houston has the stronger defensive assessment and a productive recent outing from Stroud, but those advantages don’t automatically translate into a comfortable cover. McCarthy’s relief performance and New York’s record against the spread give the Giants a credible counterweight. The key is whether New York can sustain drives before it needs another late rescue: that would make it harder for Houston to create separation and give the Giants a larger role in the scoring outlook at 42.5.
