Vegas has won eight of its first 12 games, but backing those wins hasn’t been nearly as rewarding as that record sounds. After consecutive 6-2 losses, the Golden Knights head to Columbus with a more interesting question than whether they can bounce back: does their road-favorite price offer value, or does their recent defensive trouble give the Blue Jackets more room than the records suggest?
Winning and paying off are different things
DraftKings’ current moneyline makes Vegas a -142 favorite. Our historical betting data offers a useful bit of perspective: flat one-unit bets on the Golden Knights in all 12 games this season have produced just 0.09 units of profit despite their 8-4 record. They’ve won regularly, but the prices have left very little reward for getting those results right.
The broader recent form still favors Vegas. The Golden Knights are 7-3 over their last 10 games, while Columbus is 3-5 this season. But Vegas just lost 6-2 at St. Louis on Thursday, following another 6-2 defeat against Tampa Bay. Columbus also comes off a 6-2 loss to Toronto on Tuesday. Neither team arrives with a reassuring latest result.
Our grades give Vegas the stronger overall assessment, B+ against B- for Columbus, with the biggest separation on the defensive side: B+ versus C+. Yet our shot projections are almost level at roughly 29 apiece. That leaves little projected shooting-volume advantage to support paying the favorite’s price; Vegas’ stronger team evaluation is the more persuasive part of its case.
Vegas also has a relevant availability concern: forward Mitch Marner is day-to-day for personal reasons. His availability is worth checking before betting rather than assuming he’ll play.
A 6.5 total with conflicting clues
Nine of Vegas’ 12 games this season have gone over their respective totals. Flat one-unit Over bets across those games returned 5.58 units of historical profit. Still, DraftKings’ current 6.5-goal total is priced toward the Under, at -130 compared with +110 for the Over. Vegas’ scoring history points one way, while the current pricing favors the other.

The expected goalies, Carter Hart and Cam Talbot, offer reasons to be cautious about either scoring story. Hart allowed six goals on 21 shots in his latest appearance for Vegas, against Tampa Bay, but allowed between one and three goals in each of his previous four appearances. Talbot stopped 33 of 35 shots in his last Columbus start before making a relief appearance against Toronto. He also allowed six goals on 23 shots against Florida earlier this month, so his recent work includes both a strong start and a rough one.
There’s another counterweight to Vegas’ high-scoring history: Columbus has scored only four goals across its last three games. Our projections don’t point to a large difference in shooting volume between the teams. At 6.5, the more useful questions are whether Columbus can improve on that recent scoring pace and whether the expected goalies can reproduce their better outings.
What matters most
Vegas has the stronger record and our stronger team assessment, but its near-break-even historical return shows why wins alone don’t establish a bargain at -142. Columbus’ clearest opening is a competitive shot count, as our projections suggest, paired with another strong Talbot start. His uneven results make that second part less dependable. For the total, Columbus’ scoring contribution is a key pressure point: its recent struggles challenge the Vegas Over trend, while both goalies have shown enough inconsistency to keep a low-scoring forecast from being comfortable. Those distinctions offer more to work with than treating two recent blowouts as a complete forecast.
