Hornets–Wizards: Better Possessions Matter in a Quick Rematch

Charlotte beat Washington 110-103 on Monday, but both teams followed that meeting by letting second-half leads slip away Wednesday. The Hornets lost the ball repeatedly in Detroit; the Wizards couldn’t stop Cleveland’s closing run. Washington is now a 1.5-point favorite in the rematch, making the ability to keep good possessions from unraveling a useful place to start.

Charlotte needs more help for Miller—and fewer giveaways

Brandon Miller scored 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in Charlotte’s 97-89 loss to Detroit. Dennis Schroder added 14 points, but nobody else on the Hornets reached double figures. Charlotte committed 25 turnovers, compared with Detroit’s 14.

The damage came at the wrong times. Charlotte led 51-44 at halftime before Detroit opened the third quarter on a 16-5 run. The Hornets turned it over eight times in that quarter and five more times in the fourth. Miller also missed five of his seven fourth-quarter shots, leaving little room to recover the lost possessions.

Our projection is for about 15 Charlotte turnovers Friday, a considerably better outlook than its latest performance. Getting back toward that level would give the Hornets more chances to use Miller’s scoring. It also matters against a Washington defense we grade D-, though our D- assessment of Charlotte’s offense tempers the opportunity.

Schroder is questionable with a foot issue for Friday's game, putting the status of Charlotte’s only other double-figure scorer Wednesday in focus. Kon Knueppel remains out with a hamstring injury; Thursday’s update said he would practice with the Greensboro Swarm. Charlotte’s guard availability is an important part of whether its attack can offer Miller more support.

Washington showed more scoring options, but couldn’t close

AJ Dybantsa scored 19 points in his NBA debut Wednesday after missing the first four games with a sprained ankle. Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr added 18 apiece, Bilal Coulibaly scored 17 and Kyshawn George had 11 assists. Washington still lost 121-111 to Cleveland.

The Wizards led 76-63 early in the third quarter and led again at 105-104 before Cleveland scored nine straight points. That’s the central concern behind their broader scoring contribution: a good offensive stretch didn’t survive the final defensive test.

We grade Washington’s offense B, matching our assessment of Charlotte’s defense. That gives the Wizards a more balanced test than the weak-offense versus weak-defense pairing at the other end. Our projections favor Washington in assists, about 26 against Charlotte’s 23, and rebounds, about 47 against 44. That outlook fits Washington’s broader scoring effort Wednesday, though its late defensive breakdown remains a real counterweight.

Dybantsa’s return also gives this meeting a different personnel backdrop from Monday, when he was still sidelined. Washington guard Tre Johnson is questionable for Friday with an Achilles issue.

The 220.5 total tests two different scoring profiles

All five Charlotte games this season have gone Under, as have four of Washington’s five. That history deserves attention at DraftKings’ 220.5 total, especially after Charlotte struggled to score beyond Miller and Schroder in Detroit.

The case for more scoring comes from the matchup itself. Washington’s weak defensive grade offers Charlotte a chance to improve, and fewer Hornets turnovers would preserve more scoring possessions. Dybantsa’s debut and the contributions around him also provide more substance than a simple reading of their two straight losses.

The counterweight is Charlotte’s B defensive grade against Washington’s B offense, together with the uncertainty around Schroder. Washington’s four straight Unders have included very different scoring environments, so the scores behind that streak matter more than the label alone.

Washington’s broader offensive options support its narrow favorite role, but Monday’s Charlotte win and the Wizards’ inability to protect a lead keep the comparison close. The Hornets’ clearest improvement is cutting the giveaways that wasted Miller’s big night; Washington’s is pairing its scoring depth with better closing stops. Those are the practical tests for the rematch.
