Hurricanes vs. Oilers: Carolina’s depth meets Edmonton’s scoring stars

Carolina doesn’t need its top line to carry every scoring chance, and Edmonton just showed how much damage its biggest names can do. That’s the interesting tension here: can the Hurricanes’ scoring depth and expected shooting edge outweigh the Oilers’ star production and Devon Levi’s strong recent goaltending? With the sportsbook barely separating these teams, the paths behind their fast starts tell us more than the records alone.

Carolina brings more than one scoring line

The Hurricanes have won eight of their last 10 games. Their latest win offered a good example of the support behind Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov: Logan Stankoven and Nikolaj Ehlers each scored twice and added an assist in Tuesday’s 6-3 victory over Vancouver, while Jackson Blake had three assists. Stankoven, Ehlers and Blake also make up Carolina’s second forward line for this matchup.

Our shooting projections give Carolina about 32 shots on goal to Edmonton’s 29. That’s a modest expected advantage in shooting volume, with Stankoven, Ehlers and Blake giving us a reason to look beyond the Aho line when considering where Carolina’s production might come from.

Edmonton has an emphatic answer at the top. In Tuesday’s 4-3 overtime win over Minnesota, Connor McDavid delivered three assists, Leon Draisaitl scored twice and Evan Bouchard supplied the power-play winner. McDavid and Draisaitl are together on Edmonton’s first forward line for this matchup. The Oilers have won seven of their nine games this season, so Carolina isn’t the only team arriving with sustained results.

A tight price, with a goaltending counterweight

The current moneyline at DraftKings has Carolina at -118 and Edmonton at -102—a small lean toward the visitors, not a price that suggests a large separation. Our grades favor Carolina defensively, A- against Edmonton’s C+, while rating both attacks A-. That stronger team assessment and modest shooting edge line up with Carolina’s slight favorite status.

The recent goalie numbers complicate that comparison. Levi has a .931 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average across his five most recent appearances for Edmonton this season. Brandon Bussi has an .882 save percentage and a 2.98 goals-against average over his five most recent Carolina appearances. They’re the expected goalies here, and that contrast in recent goalie performance gives Edmonton a meaningful counterweight to Carolina’s advantages elsewhere, even with only five appearances apiece to compare. Levi most recently stopped 27 of 30 shots against Minnesota.

What matters at a 6.5-goal total

The 6.5 total puts two highly rated attacks against a less straightforward goaltending picture. Carolina’s secondary scoring and Edmonton’s McDavid-Draisaitl combination supply a credible case for goals. Bussi’s recent results offer less reassurance than Levi’s, whose strong five-appearance stretch is the clearest restraint on that scoring case. Our stronger defensive grade for Carolina provides another reason not to judge the total on the attacking names alone.

The historical betting context also deserves a little perspective. Over the past year, 55 of Edmonton’s 90 games went over their posted totals, returning 10.42 units from flat one-unit over bets. This season’s results are less pronounced: five of nine Edmonton games went over, while six of Carolina’s 11 went under. Those results came against their respective historical lines; tonight’s 6.5 still needs to be judged against this particular mix of scoring depth and goaltending.

The matchup’s pressure point

Carolina’s strongest case is that its scoring threats extend beyond one line, backed by a modest expected shooting edge and our stronger defensive assessment. Edmonton counters with a dangerous top combination and the better recent goalie results. At a nearly even moneyline, that goalie contrast matters: Levi has recently shown the stopping ability to blunt Carolina’s extra volume. It’s also the key tension at 6.5, where the attacking talent is clear but the recent goaltending evidence points in different directions.
