Illinois arrives at Maryland with a win over Oregon and a modest assignment from the sportsbook: cover as a 2.5-point road favorite. The Illini have the better record, but our projections suggest the Terrapins can keep pace in yardage through a different route—more passing, less rushing. That makes this matchup less about a clear statistical mismatch and more about whether Illinois can build on last week’s breakthrough against a Maryland team that’s lost five straight.
Illinois has momentum, but the spread asks a different question
Illinois beat Oregon 21-10 last Saturday to improve to 4-3. Aidan Laughery ran for 123 yards and a touchdown, including a 75-yard scoring run, while Illinois finished with just 84 passing yards. It was an effective winning formula that day, though the long touchdown supplied most of Laughery’s rushing yards.
Maryland’s most recent game was a 37-30 loss to Rutgers on Oct. 17, leaving the Terrapins at 2-5. They’ve allowed at least 35 points in every game of their five-game losing streak. That’s the clearest opening for Illinois: Maryland hasn’t recently shown it can keep opponents’ scoring in check.
Still, winning and covering haven’t lined up neatly for either team. Both are 3-4 against the spread through seven games this season. DraftKings’ short line gives Illinois a small hurdle, but the Illini’s better record alone doesn’t establish that the price is favorable.
Our projections give Maryland a way to stay involved
Our yardage projections put Illinois at roughly 160 rushing yards compared with 130 for Maryland. The passing comparison runs the other way: about 260 yards for the Terrapins and 220 for the Illini. Overall, Maryland has a slight projected yardage advantage, roughly 390 to 380.
That comparison matters because it challenges an easy reading of Maryland’s losing streak. We don’t project an offense that’s simply outmatched here. Illinois has the stronger expected rushing output, while Maryland’s route to staying competitive runs more heavily through the air. The key tension is whether that passing production can help Maryland offset the scoring it’s been allowing.

Why the 53.5-point total deserves its own look
Maryland’s defensive results put upward pressure on the scoring outlook. Six of its seven games this season have gone over their sportsbook totals, producing a historical profit of 4.47 units from flat one-unit Over bets. Illinois games have also gone over in five of seven this season.
There’s a counterweight in Illinois’ longer history: seven of its 12 games over the past year stayed under their totals, including last Saturday’s 31-point game against Oregon. Maryland’s scoring hasn’t been consistently strong during its skid, either, ranging from three points against UCLA to 30 against Rutgers. At 53.5, Maryland’s ability to contribute offense matters alongside its defensive struggles. Our passing projection gives the Terrapins a plausible way to do that, while their uneven recent results keep the scoring outlook from being a one-way argument.
The takeaway
Illinois has the more convincing recent result and a clear opportunity against a struggling Maryland defense. The counterweight is that our yardage projections leave the Terrapins very much involved. For the spread, Illinois’ ability to turn its rushing advantage into sustained scoring matters more than the gap in records. For the total, Maryland’s passing production is the central question: it offers a route to points, but the Terrapins haven’t delivered consistent scoring during their losing streak.
