Indiana has won six of its seven games, but it has covered the spread just once. That distinction matters with the Hoosiers entering Michigan as 7-point favorites: being the stronger team and creating separation are different challenges. Our projections give Indiana the more productive passing game, while Michigan’s defense and recent low-scoring games suggest that cushion deserves a closer look.
Indiana’s passing edge meets a stubborn opponent
The Hoosiers are coming off a 19-15 loss to Ohio State on Saturday, their first defeat of the season. Josh Hoover threw for 296 yards, and Indiana nearly took the lead late before Nick Marsh landed out of bounds on a fourth-down pass into the end zone. The Hoosiers also lost two fumbles. They had opportunities against a strong opponent, but didn’t turn enough of them into points.
Our passing-yard projections give Indiana about 240 yards here, compared with roughly 150 for Michigan. That’s the clearest statistical difference between the teams. The rushing comparison goes the other way, though: we project around 160 yards for Michigan and 140 for Indiana. The Wolverines have a plausible way to keep their attack moving without matching the Hoosiers through the air.
We also rate both defenses highly: Michigan earns an A, with Indiana a notch higher at A+. That makes this more interesting than a simple comparison of the teams’ records. Indiana has the stronger overall profile, but Michigan’s defense offers a meaningful obstacle to turning that advantage into a comfortable margin.
Michigan’s spark needs some context
Michigan beat Penn State 21-18 on Saturday after Tommy Carr replaced Bryce Underwood at halftime. Underwood threw two interceptions before the break; Carr later scored on a 12-yard run with 2:58 remaining. The Wolverines scored all 21 of their points in the second half.
That turnaround was encouraging, but Penn State turnovers helped it along. A late fumble gave Michigan the ball at the Penn State 16 before Carr’s touchdown. The result showed how Michigan could win a close game, while leaving a fair question about how consistently it can sustain scoring drives against Indiana’s highly rated defense.

What the 41.5 total asks of these teams
Five of Michigan’s six games this season have finished under their sportsbook totals. Its last three games produced combined scores of 39, 34 and 39, with the Wolverines scoring 19, 14 and 21 points. Indiana has also slowed down recently, beating Nebraska 20-17 before the Ohio State loss.
Those results and the defensive grades give the posted total of 41.5 a clear low-scoring backdrop. The counterweight is Indiana’s projected passing production and Michigan’s second-half improvement last week. Turnovers matter here, too: they stopped Indiana possessions against Ohio State and handed Michigan a short field against Penn State. That’s a meaningful risk to a low-scoring outlook, especially if either defense gives its offense a short field.
The distinction to keep in mind
Indiana’s passing advantage is the strongest reason to expect it to put pressure on Michigan. The Wolverines’ defense and projected rushing output are the main reasons separation may be harder to find. Neither team has rewarded spread bettors consistently this season—Michigan is 2-4 against the number—so Indiana’s poor cover record isn’t enough on its own to make the Wolverines attractive. The key is whether the Hoosiers can turn their passing production into sustained scoring drives rather than the missed opportunities they had against Ohio State. With both defenses rated highly and a modest total, that efficiency matters more than the gap between the teams’ records.
