Aiden Flora gave Iowa State an offensive explosion last week. Now comes a tougher test: taking that production on the road against unbeaten, eighth-ranked BYU and a defense we rate highly. Flora gives the Cyclones a way to challenge a double-digit favorite, but their own defensive struggles leave little room for an offensive slowdown. A significant concern in BYU’s backfield adds another wrinkle.
Flora gives Iowa State a route into the game
In Saturday’s 45-42 win over West Virginia, Flora rushed for 212 yards and three touchdowns and threw two more touchdown passes on halfback plays. Iowa State piled up 577 yards, while Jaylen Raynor threw for 264 and Cody Jackson caught six passes for 160. That wasn’t just one player finding a few big plays; the Cyclones had production through multiple routes.
The catch is what happened on the other side of the ball. Iowa State allowed 518 yards and needed two late go-ahead drives to escape. That makes offensive consistency particularly important here: another productive night may still leave the Cyclones needing stops they struggled to get last Saturday.
Our yardage projections suggest a more restrained outing against BYU: roughly 330 total yards for Iowa State, including about 155 on the ground. Those expectations put Flora’s breakout in perspective. He gives the Cyclones a compelling threat, but repeating last week’s output against this opponent is a much bigger ask. We give BYU’s defense the edge in that matchup, A- to Iowa State’s B on offense.
BYU’s backfield concern complicates the favorite’s case
BYU showed it could win a tight, low-scoring game in its 17-10 win at TCU last Saturday. Bear Bachmeier ran for both Cougars touchdowns, including the late score that provided breathing room, while BYU held the Horned Frogs to 259 yards. That defensive performance offers a clear contrast with Iowa State’s shootout.

Running back LJ Martin is doubtful with a lower-leg injury, according to Yahoo Sports’ Tuesday report, which describes a possible committee approach in his place. It’s a meaningful concern for a favorite being asked to win by more than ten points. Bachmeier supplied crucial rushing production last week, but BYU’s offense finished with just 216 total yards.
We project closer to 375 total yards for the Cougars this time, and we give their offense a slight edge over Iowa State’s defense, B+ to B. There’s a case for BYU to move the ball more effectively than it did at TCU, though Martin’s status remains an important counterweight.
The spread puts the focus on sustained execution
BYU is a 10.5-point favorite at DraftKings, putting the difference between winning and covering at the center of this matchup. The Cougars’ defense, which we rate more highly, gives them a credible path to containing Flora, but their 216-yard outing at TCU and Martin’s injury concern make sustained offense the main question. Iowa State has shown it can create explosive plays; pairing those with more reliable defensive stops is its route to staying competitive. The key is whether BYU can turn its defensive advantage into control of the game without its own offense stalling.
