Utah and Memphis begin their seasons Wednesday with fresh faces and a familiar challenge: getting enough stops. Rookie debuts for Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer add intrigue, but the betting question runs deeper. Memphis is a 2.5-point favorite at DraftKings despite our stronger offensive evaluation of Utah, while a total of 241.5 puts a substantial scoring expectation on two teams starting a new season.
Utah’s attack gives Memphis something to solve
Our grades favor the Jazz offensively, with a B compared with Memphis’ C. Neither team earns much confidence at the other end: we give the Grizzlies a D defensively and Utah an F. That creates a useful tension around the spread. Utah has the stronger attacking evaluation, but its defensive weakness gives Memphis a plausible way to keep answering.
Our rebound and assist projections also favor Utah, with about 45 rebounds to Memphis’ 40, alongside roughly 32 assists to 29. The rebounding difference offers the Jazz another potential advantage, while the assist comparison points toward more assisted baskets. Those numbers don’t establish the pace, but they add to Utah’s case for making this a competitive opener.
There’s a new-player wrinkle, too. Peterson and Boozer make their NBA debuts for Utah and Memphis, respectively. Their arrival makes this more than a continuation of last season—and makes old results less useful as a complete guide to the matchup.
What supports the 241.5 total?
The clearest support for a high-scoring environment is the defensive matchup. Utah’s stronger attack faces a Memphis defense we rate poorly, while the Grizzlies face the weaker of the two defensive evaluations. Both teams have a route to scoring without needing to overcome a highly rated opposing unit.

There’s historical context behind that scoring potential. Across Utah’s 82 games in the past year, 49 went over their sportsbook totals, or 59.8%. Flat one-unit bets on every over would have returned a historical profit of 11.66 units. Memphis’ corresponding 82-game sample was less convincing: 43 overs and a profit of just 0.39 units.
That contrast matters at 241.5. Utah’s history supports taking the scoring potential seriously, but Memphis’ broader record offers much less encouragement than the five straight overs it finished last season with. Those results came at different totals, before this season’s reset. The defensive concerns give the high-scoring case substance, but clearing an elevated total still asks plenty of these new-look teams.
The key to this opener
Utah’s offensive edge and projected rebounding advantage give it a credible way to challenge the home favorite. Memphis’ strongest counterweight is the Jazz defense: the Grizzlies may not need the better overall attack if Utah struggles to interrupt their scoring. The spread turns on whether Utah can make its offensive and rebounding advantages count while getting enough stops to keep Memphis from answering. At 241.5, the weak defenses are the strongest current matchup argument for scoring; the uneven historical over records and roster reset make that a more demanding proposition than the defensive grades alone suggest.
