A spread beyond a field goal asks Chicago to do more than simply build on its best performance of the young season. The Bears have a sizable projected yardage edge, but their quarterback decision remains unsettled publicly, while New York must determine whether last week’s passing surge can travel without Breece Hall and several other offensive pieces.
Chicago has a workable blueprint
Case Keenum gave the Bears a convincing version of that blueprint in Monday night’s 27-7 win over Philadelphia. He completed 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns, and Chicago added 128 rushing yards. The Bears also held Philadelphia to 62 yards after halftime, turning a competitive first half into a comfortable win.
That performance matters even though the next quarterback decision remains open. ESPN reported Friday that coach Ben Johnson wasn’t ready to name Keenum or Tyson Bagent as the starter. Caleb Williams is doubtful with a hamstring injury, and D’Andre Swift is questionable with a knee issue.
Our yardage projections give Chicago the stronger outlook: about 375 total yards, including roughly 225 through the air and 150 on the ground. New York lands near 285 total yards. That gap gives the Bears a plausible route to extending possessions and reducing how much they need from whichever quarterback gets the assignment.
New York’s passing game is the counterweight
The Jets’ best answer is what Geno Smith and Garrett Wilson did in a 31-24 loss to Detroit. Smith threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns, Wilson caught 10 passes for 107 yards and a score, and New York erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit before a late fumble ended its final chance. That comeback showed how quickly the offense can change a game when Smith finds a rhythm.
The New York injury report makes repeating that performance more difficult. Hall, wide receiver Adonai Mitchell and tight end Mason Taylor are out, while Kenyon Sadiq is questionable with a back injury after catching seven passes for 105 yards and a touchdown against Detroit. With Hall unavailable, Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis are the remaining backs on the supplied depth chart.
Our projections put the Jets near 165 passing yards and 120 rushing yards. That passing estimate is well below Smith’s Week 3 production, so New York’s clearest path is to recreate the efficiency and downfield success from its comeback rather than rely on sheer play volume.

Can Chicago create enough separation?
The current spread makes Chicago a 3.5-point favorite, which raises the bar beyond a field-goal win. The case for separation starts with the broader yardage outlook and the balance Chicago displayed against Philadelphia. The uncertainty at quarterback and Swift’s status are the main reasons that case isn’t uncomplicated.
The total of 43.5 offers a secondary look at the same tension. Both teams reached at least 24 points last week, but Chicago allowed only seven and New York has since lost its lead running back. Early-down efficiency should help settle the scoring environment: a steady Bears running game would support control of possession and pace, while another productive Smith-Wilson connection could force a more open game.
Final assessment
Chicago owns the stronger yardage outlook, and Keenum has already shown that the offense can run smoothly without Williams. New York’s passing ceiling is the strongest counterweight; Smith and Wilson can keep the margin tight if they carry over last week’s rhythm. The factor that matters most is whether Chicago can pair an efficient running game with steady quarterback play, because that’s the clearest route to turning its statistical edge into more than a one-score grind.
