Liberty vs. Coastal Carolina Preview: Can the Flames Create Separation?

Liberty’s 51-point performance last week makes the Flames easy to notice, but Thursday’s short spread raises the more interesting question: Can they turn a projected advantage on the ground into meaningful separation from Coastal Carolina? The Chanticleers are coming off a loss, yet their passing game and stronger recent record against the spread give the home side a credible counter.

Liberty’s clearest advantage is on the ground

Liberty enters at 2-1 after beating Ball State 51-15. Deshawn Purdie completed 13 of 20 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns in that victory, while the Flames added three rushing scores, according to the AP.

Our team projections put Liberty near 401 total yards, compared with roughly 356 for Coastal Carolina. Nearly all of that projected difference comes from the running game: The Flames are around 197 rushing yards on 43 attempts, while the Chanticleers are near 152 yards on 36 carries. The passing projections are essentially even at about 204 yards per team.

That gives Liberty a clear route to control. The Flames don’t necessarily need another explosive passing performance if their anticipated rushing volume keeps the offense moving. Coastal Carolina’s challenge is preventing that ground advantage from becoming a steady run of productive drives.

Coastal Carolina has a passing-game counter

The Chanticleers fell to 1-2 with a 22-14 loss at Delaware, but Deuce Bailey still threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Coastal Carolina also reached the red zone with a chance to tighten the game late before being stopped on fourth down, as the AP reported.

There’s another side to that result: Delaware threw for 302 yards and two scores against Coastal Carolina. That creates some concern about the Chanticleers’ ability to contain Purdie if Liberty’s running game puts the defense in difficult situations. Coastal’s own passing production, however, gives the home team a way to answer if Liberty can’t establish its projected advantage on the ground.

The matchup also comes with plenty of familiarity. Liberty coach Jamey Chadwell previously coached Coastal Carolina, and Liberty holds an 8-7 lead in the series, as CBS Sports notes. That history adds some texture, although it doesn’t settle how this meeting will play out.

What the short spread is asking

The latest DraftKings spread has Liberty favored by 2.5 points at -112, with Coastal Carolina +2.5 at -108. It’s a modest number, but recent results complicate the case for treating Liberty’s better record and larger projected yardage total as automatic separation.

Across their last 10 games against the spread, Coastal Carolina is 6-4 while Liberty is 3-7. The Chanticleers have also covered two of their first three games this season, compared with one cover for the Flames. Those records don’t determine Thursday’s outcome, but they’re a useful reminder that winning and clearing the market’s expectation are different challenges.

Final assessment

Liberty has the more convincing statistical route to control: an expected rushing advantage, greater projected total yardage and a quarterback coming off an efficient three-touchdown performance. Coastal Carolina’s counter is a passing game that remained productive in defeat, along with a recent history of staying more competitive against the number.

The biggest factor is whether Coastal Carolina can shrink Liberty’s projected ground edge. If the Chanticleers can force more obvious passing situations, Bailey’s arm gives them a credible way to keep a short spread tight. If Liberty consistently stays ahead of the chains, its anticipated rushing volume could become the defining difference.
