Louisiana Tech’s shutout streak meets South Alabama’s rebound test

Louisiana Tech has won four straight and hasn’t allowed a point in its past two games. That’s a compelling way to arrive as a six-point road favorite against South Alabama—but the Jaguars present a different test than the shutout streak might suggest. Their offense scored 52 and 56 points in consecutive games before stumbling at Marshall, and our projections anticipate a much more competitive yardage matchup than Louisiana Tech’s recent scores imply.

What’s behind the Bulldogs’ momentum?

Louisiana Tech beat Old Dominion 26-0 last Saturday after blanking Louisiana-Monroe 24-0 the week before. Against Old Dominion, Blake Baker completed 28 of 34 passes for 303 yards and accounted for a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown. Eli Finley caught 10 passes for 128 yards, while Jalen Mickens added 110 yards on eight catches.

That passing production matters alongside the shutouts: the Bulldogs didn’t need their defense to do all the work. Still, the opponent provides some perspective on the latest defensive performance. Old Dominion started third-string quarterback Jaxon Potter in his first start for the Monarchs, and Louisiana Tech sacked him six times while holding the team to minus-12 rushing yards.

The Bulldogs have also rewarded bettors beyond those two wins. Our historical betting data shows they’ve covered the spread in six of seven games this season, producing a profit of 4.52 units from flat one-unit bets. That’s a strong record at those past prices; this road assignment is a separate test.

South Alabama has a route back into this game

South Alabama’s last outing was a 20-13 loss at Marshall on October 20. The Jaguars managed 326 total yards, and Jared Hollins threw for 148 yards with an interception. They nevertheless tied the game with 4:38 left on PJ Martin’s touchdown run before Marshall answered with the winning drive.

Our projections give South Alabama about 400 total yards here, compared with roughly 375 for Louisiana Tech. The Jaguars’ rushing projection is about 200 yards. That’s a meaningful counterweight to the shutout narrative: we anticipate South Alabama moving the ball, rather than Louisiana Tech simply repeating its recent defensive dominance.

For the spread, that makes the distinction between winning and creating separation especially important. Louisiana Tech brings the stronger recent results and Baker’s productive latest outing. South Alabama’s case for staying close rests on recovering enough offensive production to keep the Bulldogs from controlling the game as comfortably as they have the past two weeks.

A mixed picture around 57.5 points

DraftKings’ total of 57.5 sits between two very different versions of these teams. Five of each team’s seven games this season have gone over their respective totals, and South Alabama’s 52-35 win over Louisiana-Monroe and 56-49 win over Arkansas State show why its games have often featured plenty of scoring.

The immediate counterweight is substantial: Louisiana Tech’s last two games stayed under, as did South Alabama’s loss at Marshall. Our yardage outlook leaves room for a Jaguars rebound, but their latest passing performance offers less support for another high-scoring exchange. At 57.5, South Alabama’s ability to recover its earlier offensive production matters more than simply extending the season’s over records, especially against a defense coming off consecutive shutouts.

Louisiana Tech’s momentum is well earned, and Baker’s recent passing success gives the Bulldogs another way to build a lead. But Old Dominion’s quarterback circumstances help explain why the latest shutout shouldn’t set the expectation here. South Alabama’s projected rushing production supplies a concrete challenge to the favorite: if the Jaguars can sustain drives again, Louisiana Tech will face a tougher separation test. Their passing drop-off at Marshall remains the strongest reason to question how far that rebound can go—and how much scoring it can support.
