LSU’s defense raises the floor
LSU beat Louisiana Tech 45-14 last Saturday, but the Tigers led only 10-7 at halftime and repeatedly hurt themselves. They committed four turnovers, took 10 penalties for 101 yards and allowed five sacks. Quarterback Sam Leavitt still finished with 344 passing yards, while tight end Trey’Dez Green caught six passes for 104 yards.
The defense supplied the stability. LSU held Louisiana Tech to 140 net yards, recorded seven sacks and forced three turnovers, according to the AP recap. Our grades reflect that strength, giving LSU an A on defense and an A overall.
That unit gives the Tigers a clear route to controlling the game. The concern is whether their offense can stay out of its own way against a stronger opponent. A three-point spread leaves far less room for empty red-zone trips, drive-killing penalties and giveaways than LSU had against Louisiana Tech.
Ole Miss brings balance and home-field pressure
Ole Miss was much cleaner in its 41-9 win over Charlotte. Trinidad Chambliss completed 23 of 26 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns while finding nine receivers. Kewan Lacy added 87 rushing yards and two scores on 13 carries as the Rebels scored on five of their first six possessions.
The AP recap also noted that Ole Miss built a 27-0 halftime lead before giving its reserves extended work. It was a steadier performance after the Rebels opened with a 41-38 win over Louisville.
Our grades give both offenses an A, but there’s more separation on defense: LSU receives an A and Ole Miss a B. The Rebels can counter that difference by keeping Chambliss in manageable situations, spreading the ball around and making LSU sustain drives in a loud road environment.
What the spread is asking bettors to decide
Our projections anticipate more total yardage from Ole Miss, roughly 440 yards to 380, with the Rebels also holding advantages in expected passing and rushing output. That makes the field-goal spread especially interesting because LSU’s defensive grade remains the clearest distinction between the teams.
