Mavericks vs. Spurs Preview: Can Dallas Keep San Antonio Out of Transition?

San Antonio scored 26 fast-break points against Utah on Monday. Four Spurs scored six apiece in the third quarter as the game slipped away from the Jazz. For Dallas, the challenge Wednesday is to slow those runs while finding clean shots against Victor Wembanyama at the other end.

The Spurs can pull away even when Wembanyama scores 12

Wembanyama had 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in Monday’s 119–97 win over Utah. Dylan Harper led seven Spurs in double figures with 17, and San Antonio won the third quarter 35–20, according to the Associated Press recap. If Dallas sends extra help toward Wembanyama, the Spurs have guards who can attack the space that opens up.

DraftKings had the Spurs favored by 11.5 at 9:40 a.m. ET Wednesday. San Antonio won the first meeting 122–106 in Dallas, but two of its five straight wins came by six and ten points. The Spurs need to win by at least 12 to cover this time.

Cooper Flagg scored 17 on 3-of-19 shooting in Monday’s 115–100 loss to Sacramento, going 11-for-11 at the line. Daniel Gafford and Walter Clayton Jr. each scored 20 while Kyrie Irving rested his left knee, per the AP recap. Max Christie is out with a hip injury. Watch how Dallas creates looks for players besides Flagg, especially with Wembanyama protecting the rim. Clean shots help Dallas keep the game close and give San Antonio fewer chances to run off misses.

Dallas has a say in whether the game gets past 226.5

The same DraftKings snapshot had the total at 226.5, with the over at −112 and the under at −108. Five of each team’s first seven games went under their own listed totals. Their first meeting is a good example of why the number matters: 228 points fell short of that game’s 229.5 line and would clear Wednesday’s.

The Spurs scored 119 against Utah and the game still finished at 216. Dallas managed 100 against Sacramento after scoring 116 against Houston and 120 against Oklahoma City. If the Mavericks get back to creating good looks, their scoring alongside San Antonio’s transition offense can push this game past 226.5. If Dallas spends the night settling for tough shots, the Spurs can build a double-digit lead while the total stays under.
