Miami vs. Notre Dame Preview: Who Gets to Dictate the Drives?

North Carolina took nearly eight and a half minutes to score on a 16-play drive against unbeaten Miami and stayed close in a 38–35 loss. On Saturday, watch how often Notre Dame can keep drives alive and what Miami does with the possessions it gets back.

Notre Dame can take its time or strike quickly

Notre Dame just saw how uncomfortable a short half can get. Navy held the Irish to three first-half possessions, and Notre Dame led only 14–13 at the break. Then the Irish opened the second half with a 78-yard touchdown drive and scored on their next two possessions. Nolan James Jr. supplied a quicker route downfield with touchdown runs of 52 and 23 yards in the 35–13 win over Navy.

Our projections give Notre Dame about 23 first downs to Miami’s 18 and roughly 155 rushing yards to Miami’s 125. DraftKings had Notre Dame favored by seven, and if the Irish can move the chains that often, they have a way to build a lead drive by drive. The same approach can keep the margin tight if those drives use up minutes and end in field goals. A breakaway run like either of James’s against Navy would give Notre Dame a way to add points without waiting for another long possession.

Miami can change the game in a hurry

Miami found two ways to flip the UNC game late. Mark Fletcher Jr. scored the go-ahead touchdown on fourth-and-goal, then Marquise Lightfoot forced a fumble that Justin Scott recovered. Darian Mensah followed with a touchdown pass to Malachi Toney to put Miami ahead by 10. That stretch shows why a Notre Dame lead can be fragile even if the Irish have spent much of the night moving the chains.

Seven of Miami’s eight games this season went over their respective totals. At DraftKings’ 56.5, the question is how those points would arrive. Miami’s game at UNC finished with 73 points even with that long Tar Heels drive, helped by a turnover that gave Miami another chance to score. Notre Dame’s win over Navy finished with 48 despite the Irish scoring three second-half touchdowns. If the Irish control possession and limit Miami’s chances, the total has more riding on how many of those long drives end in touchdowns. Short fields and explosive runs can change that calculation fast.

Watch what follows Notre Dame’s first sustained drive. A touchdown followed by a quick stop of Miami gives the Irish a chance to build separation. A field goal followed by a Miami touchdown can undo several minutes of good work in a hurry. That sequence tells you more about how the spread and total are shaping up than time of possession alone.
