No. 9 UCLA has kept winning, but it scored just 17 points in each of its last two victories. That makes Saturday’s matchup with Michigan State an interesting test: can the unbeaten Bruins create enough separation to justify being a 14-point favorite? The Spartans are 2-5, yet their last two losses came by a combined four points. Our projections point to UCLA’s running game as its clearest advantage.
Michigan State has been tougher than its record looks
The Spartans’ last two losses were particularly close: they lost 38-37 to Illinois before falling 24-21 to Northwestern on Saturday, when a field goal with two seconds left settled the game. Against Northwestern, Alessio Milivojevic threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns, including a 53-yard scoring pass to Chrishon McCray that gave Michigan State an eight-point fourth-quarter lead.
Those games explain why the Spartans’ losing record isn’t the whole betting story. They’ve covered the spread in four of seven games this season, with two losses and one push. Historical flat one-unit bets on Michigan State in those seven games returned a profit of 1.81 units. They haven’t consistently found ways to win, but they’ve often stayed closer than the line required. That resilience hasn’t been consistent, though: earlier in this five-game losing streak, Wisconsin beat them 31-3 and Nebraska won 31-13.
UCLA brings a stronger recent defensive case. The Bruins beat Oregon 17-15, then beat Wisconsin 17-7 on Saturday. Ty Dieffenbach completed 22 of 33 passes for 264 yards against the Badgers, while Wayne Knight and Anthony Woods each ran for a touchdown. UCLA has shown it can win without a big scoring day; covering this spread asks more of its ability to build a cushion.
The clearest projected gap is on the ground
Our rushing projections put UCLA at roughly 195 yards and Michigan State at about 115. Expected passing production is much closer, at around 200 yards for each team. That makes the ground game the most useful distinction in our statistical outlook—not a sweeping advantage across every part of the matchup.
For UCLA, that rushing edge offers a plausible way to sustain drives and make Michigan State chase the game. The Spartans’ counterweight is their recent ability to produce through the air and keep games competitive. Their defense also recorded five sacks against Northwestern, giving them a concrete performance to build on rather than just a close final score.

What that means for a 44.5-point total
DraftKings’ total of 44.5 puts the scoring question alongside the spread. UCLA’s last two games support the possibility of another restrained afternoon, and five of Michigan State’s seven games this season have finished Under their respective totals. A productive Bruins rushing attack could sustain possessions without requiring a high-volume passing game, although rushing yardage alone doesn’t tell us how quickly those possessions will unfold or how often they’ll end in touchdowns.
There’s a meaningful counterweight, though: Michigan State scored 37 against Illinois, and UCLA scored 52 and 54 in consecutive September wins. The recent lower-scoring results deserve attention, but neither team’s season has followed one scoring pattern. At this total, whether Michigan State can turn its recent passing production into sustained scoring is more useful to watch than simply extending an Under trend.
UCLA has the stronger winning résumé and the clearer projected rushing advantage. Michigan State’s recent close finishes make the two-touchdown spread a more demanding proposition than the records alone suggest, but its earlier lopsided losses show that staying competitive is far from automatic. UCLA’s ground game offers its clearest route to a cushion; Michigan State’s ability to answer with productive passing drives is the main obstacle to turning that advantage into separation.
