Nationals vs. Tigers Preview: Can Detroit’s Contact Edge Hold Up?

Detroit made this matchup look simple in Monday’s 9-2 win, but the rematch presents a more interesting question: Is the Tigers’ projected edge at the plate strong enough to support the favorite’s price when both lineups have been so unpredictable lately?

A new pitching matchup changes the picture

The Tigers hit three home runs in the series opener, including shots from Javier Báez, Ben Malgeri and Spencer Torkelson, according to the AP’s recap. That production came against a different group of pitchers, however. The confirmed starters for this game are Riley Cornelio and Drew Anderson.

Washington starts James Wood, Daylen Lile, Dylan Crews and CJ Abrams at the top of its order. Detroit counters with Gleyber Torres, Hao-Yu Lee, Kevin McGonigle and Eduardo Valencia. Colt Keith’s placement on the 10-day injured list with a left thumb sprain removes one option from the Tigers’ lineup, with McGonigle starting at third base.

Our hitting projections give Detroit a modest advantage: about eight hits and 14 total bases compared with roughly seven hits and 12 total bases for Washington. The projected home-run difference is much smaller—just over one for each club—so Detroit’s edge is more about overall expected output than another three-homer performance.

Recent results show plenty of volatility

Both teams are 6-4 across their last 10 games, but neither reached that record steadily. Detroit scored at least six runs six times and exactly one run in each of the other four games. Washington scored six or more five times while finishing with four or fewer in the other five.

That makes Monday’s result relevant without making it decisive. Detroit has repeatedly shown the ability to produce big innings, while Washington needs something closer to the lineup that scored eight and nine runs in consecutive games at St. Louis than the one held to five combined runs in its past two games.

What the price asks of Detroit

The latest DraftKings moneyline has Detroit at -156 and Washington at +129. That price recognizes Detroit’s home-field position and the small edge in our hitting projections, but it also asks bettors to trust a Tigers lineup that recently alternated between big outbursts and one-run games.

The total is eight, with the over at -119 and the under at -101. Seven of Washington’s last 10 games went over their listed totals, while Detroit had six overs, three unders and a push. That offers some scoring context, but the new pitching matchup and each lineup’s wide swings make the total more complicated than a simple extension of Monday’s result.

Final assessment

Detroit has the clearer projected hitting edge and just showed how quickly its lineup can change a game when the extra-base hits arrive together. The counterweight is that the expected contact gap isn’t large, both clubs share the same 6-4 recent record and neither lineup has produced consistently. The most important factor is likely which team turns ordinary traffic on the bases into extra-base damage—not whether Detroit can simply repeat Monday’s power display.
