Brooklyn’s first win will require more than another promising start. The Nets led Detroit by 10 on Friday before a turnover-filled third quarter helped turn the game into a 16-point loss. Sunday brings an Indiana team with defensive problems of its own, giving Brooklyn a useful opening if it can keep its offense from unraveling.
Brooklyn needs to finish its possessions
Detroit beat the Nets 110-94 after forcing nine Brooklyn turnovers in the third quarter and outscoring them 37-17 in that period. Brooklyn shot 40% for the game, with Julius Randle scoring 15 points and Michael Porter Jr. adding 13. The Pistons also had a 27-11 advantage in fast-break points.
That sequence gives Brooklyn a specific problem to solve. Better shooting helps only if the Nets keep enough possessions to get those shots away. Our projections put Brooklyn at about 15 turnovers and Indiana at about 14, so there isn’t a large projected ball-security advantage to lean on for either team.
The 0-5 record tells only part of Brooklyn’s betting story. The Nets lost by one at Boston and by four at Cleveland in their two road games this season, covering the spread in both. Their latest home loss was much less competitive. Those narrow road losses give Brooklyn more to build on than its winless record suggests, even with just two games to judge.
Indiana’s defense leaves room for a response
The Pacers lost 145-125 at Miami on Friday. Andrew Nembhard scored 22 points, but Indiana allowed Miami to outscore it 67-46 across the middle two quarters. Indiana’s 42-point first quarter showed its attacking potential; the game also showed how quickly that production can be outweighed at the other end.
Indiana has now lost three straight. It did beat Brooklyn 136-109 last Sunday, which gives the Pacers a direct recent result to build on. Still, that win sits between other losses in a 2-4 start. It’s a useful example of what Indiana can do against this opponent, rather than a reason to assume the rematch follows the same pattern.
The Pacers’ current availability reports add another consideration. Ivica Zubac is out with an ankle issue for Sunday’s game against Brooklyn. Aaron Nesmith is probable with a hamstring issue, while Obi Toppin is questionable because of his back. Zubac’s absence and Toppin’s uncertain status put Indiana’s frontcourt depth in focus.
Porter’s points line is 22.5 and Randle’s is 20.5. Both follow much lower scoring totals against Detroit, but Indiana’s latest defensive result is a reason to consider the change of opponent. It’s also a reason to avoid assuming that Friday’s individual totals, or one poor Indiana defensive game, settle either prop.

A modest favorite with a scoring question
Indiana is a 3.5-point favorite at DraftKings. Its earlier win over Brooklyn supports the favorite’s case, but the Pacers’ three-game losing run and Brooklyn’s close road losses make the current decision more demanding than simply backing the team with a win. For the Nets, protecting the ball would give Porter and Randle a better chance to supply enough offense to stay involved.
The total is 230.5. Indiana’s 125 points at Miami and 136 in the first Brooklyn meeting give a higher-scoring game a credible route, especially if its defense again allows the opponent to contribute freely. Brooklyn’s 94-point outing against Detroit supplies the counterweight: weak shooting and lost possessions can also suppress its own scoring, even while helping the other team.
That is why Brooklyn’s offensive execution connects the two markets. If the Nets get shots away consistently, they can challenge a vulnerable Indiana defense and make the spread more competitive. If possessions disappear as they did in Friday’s third quarter, Indiana can gain separation without Brooklyn necessarily doing enough to support a high total. The Nets’ ability to sustain offense is the more useful test than either team’s last final score alone.
