Nevada made San Jose State work for almost everything last Saturday, then used long touchdown drives to build a 28-13 win. Repeating that approach at UCLA would be a much bigger achievement. The unbeaten Bruins are 22.5-point favorites at DraftKings after holding Michigan State to 156 total yards, making Nevada’s ability to sustain drives a useful starting point for this matchup.
Nevada’s best case starts with staying on the field
The Wolf Pack opened the scoring against San Jose State with a 16-play, 64-yard touchdown drive that included five third-down conversions. A later touchdown came at the end of an 84-yard drive. Luke Duncan threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns without an interception in the 28-13 victory.
Nevada’s defense did its part, too. Through three quarters, San Jose State had just 70 total yards and had failed on all 10 third-down attempts. The Wolf Pack also got a 90-yard kickoff return from Ky Woods to set up a short touchdown run. Sustained possessions and a big special-teams play gave Nevada different ways to build its lead.
That win moved Nevada to 3-4. It has covered the spread in each of its last four games, a stretch that included two outright losses. The Wolf Pack have recently been more competitive against the line than their losing record alone suggests.
UCLA has shown how it can take a game away
UCLA beat Michigan State 28-10 despite falling behind 7-0 after an early fumble. The Bruins finished with a 443-156 yardage advantage, including a 280-13 edge across the second and third quarters of the 28-10 win. That middle-game stretch gives substance to the favorite’s case: UCLA recovered from an early mistake and kept Michigan State’s offense from answering.
Ty Dieffenbach threw for 198 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown to Brian Rowe Jr. Jalen Woods ran for 87 yards, and three different Bruins scored rushing touchdowns. UCLA could produce a quick strike while also getting touchdowns from its running game.
Our projections favor UCLA in both areas, with roughly 203 passing yards and 207 rushing yards, compared with about 152 and 162 for Nevada. The total-yardage outlook is about 410 for the Bruins and 313 for the Wolf Pack. Our grades also favor UCLA, with B marks on both sides of the ball against Nevada’s C- offense and C+ defense.
Those comparisons support UCLA having more ways to generate offense. Nevada’s challenge is to turn its own projected production into useful possessions instead of allowing the Bruins another stretch of unanswered scores. UCLA’s recent 17-15 win at Oregon and 17-7 win over Wisconsin also show that its unbeaten season hasn’t required a big offensive total every week.

Long drives and quick strikes meet a 44.5 total
UCLA’s last three games have gone Under, and four of seven games for each team have finished Under this season. The recent defensive results and Nevada’s need to extend possessions help explain why the 44.5-point total deserves attention alongside the large spread.
The counterweight is the variety of scoring opportunities in the latest wins. UCLA had a 63-yard touchdown pass; Nevada had a 90-yard kickoff return and a touchdown pass from receiver Marshaun Brown. If either team gets those shortcuts again, scoring can arrive without a long series of successful offensive plays. Nevada’s ability to repeat its third-down work is especially relevant: sustained drives could keep UCLA’s offense waiting, while stalled possessions would put more pressure on the Wolf Pack defense.
UCLA has the stronger case across the matchup, backed by its recent defensive control and the larger production outlook. Nevada’s four-game run of covers offers a reason to look beyond the standings, but its path depends on sustaining offense against UCLA’s better-rated defense. The most useful test is whether the Wolf Pack can reproduce those long drives before UCLA establishes another commanding stretch.
