Pittsburgh brings a 5-0 record into Saturday’s matchup with North Carolina, but its latest win was anything but comfortable. The Panthers erased a 14-point deficit against Virginia Tech and survived a potential game-winning field goal. Now they face a 2-2 UNC team that showed some passing punch against Notre Dame. The interesting question is whether Pitt can build a steadier advantage this week—or leave another opponent within one big play of changing the game.
Pitt’s escape offers both encouragement and a warning
The Panthers edged Virginia Tech 35-33 last Friday, showing they could recover from a rough start. It also came with a substantial assist from four Hokies turnovers, which Pittsburgh converted into 14 points. Virginia Tech outgained Pitt 499-295 and still had a chance to win at the finish.
That’s the tension behind the favorite’s case. Pittsburgh found enough decisive plays to stay unbeaten, but it could have less room for error if the next opponent protects the ball. In the current DraftKings spread, Pittsburgh is a 3.5-point favorite, so a field-goal win wouldn’t be enough for Panthers backers. Pitt needs more separation than it managed last week.
UNC has a passing threat, but needs help on the ground
North Carolina’s 37-26 loss to Notre Dame last Saturday wasn’t short on encouraging moments. Billy Edwards Jr. threw three touchdown passes, Jordan Shipp caught seven passes for 109 yards, and Jelani Thurman added two touchdown catches. The problem was the supporting production: UNC rushed for just 77 yards on 23 carries, while Edwards threw two interceptions.
The Tar Heels also got within 21-20 on a kickoff-return touchdown before Notre Dame answered with a 17-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. UNC produced the explosive moment, but couldn’t prevent the sustained response. Against Pitt, getting more from the running game and avoiding turnovers would give those passing gains a better chance to translate into a competitive finish.

Our projections give Pitt a yardage edge
Our team projections put Pittsburgh at roughly 355 total yards and North Carolina at about 295. The passing comparison is around 235 yards for Pitt against 195 for UNC, while the rushing projections are approximately 125 and 100 yards, respectively. That suggests a production advantage for the Panthers across both phases, rather than a matchup resting entirely on one.
There’s still a useful counterweight: Pitt just won despite being substantially outgained, while UNC found passing success against Notre Dame. Yardage alone won’t settle this spread. The strongest case for Pittsburgh is its expected advantage through the air and on the ground; the concern is whether it can turn that output into sustained drives without needing another batch of opponent mistakes. For North Carolina, protecting the ball and finding enough rushing support are the clearest ways to keep its passing game relevant deep into the afternoon. How reliably each offense sustains drives matters more here than another isolated explosive play.
