Notre Dame vs. BYU: Can the Cougars slow a big-play offense?

Notre Dame’s big plays have been overwhelming opponents. BYU’s defense offers a compelling test of whether that can continue. The No. 2 Fighting Irish are 6-0, while the No. 8 Cougars are 5-0 and have covered every spread this season. The central question is whether BYU can make Notre Dame build drives instead of racing straight to the end zone—and get more points from its own offensive opportunities.

Notre Dame brings more than one big-play threat

The Irish routed Stanford 58-7 on Saturday, scoring five touchdowns on plays of at least 30 yards. Freshman Jonaz Walton rushed for 181 yards, including touchdown runs of 97 and 40 yards, while C.J. Carr threw three touchdown passes. Aneyas Williams added a 70-yard touchdown reception, giving BYU more to account for than one runner breaking loose.

Our projections favor Notre Dame in overall production: roughly 435 total yards compared with 344 for BYU. The Irish’s expected output includes about 257 passing yards and 178 rushing yards. That balance matters because BYU’s challenge isn’t simply stopping the run that produced Walton’s highlights; Carr and the passing game also supplied quick scores.

Still, BYU has earned a closer look than the underdog label alone suggests. The Cougars held Iowa State to 200 total yards in Friday’s 24-10 win, including just 49 before halftime. Our grades give both teams an A- on defense, with Notre Dame holding the offensive edge, A to A-. We expect more production from the Irish, but we also rate the defense trying to contain them highly.

The spread tests BYU’s unbeaten betting record

DraftKings has Notre Dame favored by 10.5 points. BYU has covered in all five games this season, producing a historical profit of 4.60 units for flat one-unit spread bets in our data. Notre Dame has covered four of its six games. Both teams are unbeaten outright, but their results against the spread show why picking the winner and evaluating the line are different questions.

BYU’s clearest offensive encouragement comes from Bear Bachmeier. Against Iowa State, he threw for a season-high 329 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another 109 yards. That gives the Cougars a recent example of their quarterback creating production through the air and on the ground. The harder part is turning that movement into enough points: BYU gained 506 yards but failed on all three fourth-down attempts, including two inside the Iowa State 5.

Why 46.5 points deserves a closer look

The posted total of 46.5 puts Notre Dame’s explosiveness and BYU’s defensive resistance in direct tension. The Irish have gone over the total in four of six games this season; BYU has gone under in three of five. Those results came against different opponents and thresholds, but they capture the contrasting scoring patterns entering this matchup.

BYU’s last game also shows why yardage alone doesn’t settle the scoring outlook. Its failed fourth-down attempts left substantial production unrewarded. Better finishes could change that picture, while Notre Dame’s ability to score from distance creates another route to quick points. Pulling the other way, BYU just delivered a strong defensive performance, and our grades rate both defenses highly. At 46.5, the key tension is whether fewer Irish breakaway scores would outweigh any improvement in BYU’s finishing.

The matchup comes down to making Notre Dame work

Notre Dame has the stronger projected production and several recent sources of explosive plays. BYU counters with credible defensive resistance and a quarterback coming off a productive night. For the Cougars to keep this competitive, limiting long touchdowns is only half the job: they also need to avoid another game of empty trips near the goal line. Their perfect spread record gives that case some historical support, but Bachmeier’s ability to turn productive drives into points against another highly rated defense is the crucial counterweight to Notre Dame’s big-play threat.
