Oklahoma’s defense gave it a chance last Saturday. Its turnovers took that chance away. That’s the tension behind the Sooners’ visit to Mississippi State: Oklahoma is a 4.5-point favorite at DraftKings, but can it play cleanly enough to create separation? The Bulldogs are coming off a shutout loss, yet our projections suggest they can compete for yards—and make this more uncomfortable than that result might imply.
Oklahoma’s defense has a case. Its offense has work to do.
The Sooners lost 21-13 to Kentucky despite allowing just 230 total yards. John Mateer threw for 270 yards and a touchdown, but Kentucky intercepted him four times, including a late pick-six. That’s a useful distinction for this matchup: Oklahoma didn’t need dramatically better defense to have a different outcome. It needed to stop giving away possessions.
We rate Oklahoma’s defense A+, ahead of Mississippi State’s B-rated unit. That gives the Sooners a credible foundation as road favorites. But across the six 2026 games in our recent-form comparison, Oklahoma covered twice, while the Bulldogs covered four times. Winning and building enough of a cushion to cover haven’t consistently gone hand in hand for the Sooners in those games.
Mississippi State can move the ball—but needs more from its drives
The Bulldogs’ 31-0 loss at LSU wasn’t a complete absence of ball movement. Mississippi State rushed for 170 yards and reached inside LSU’s 40 five times, but each of those possessions ended with a failed fourth-down attempt. Still, consecutive losses by more than 30 points are a substantial counterweight to that encouraging yardage detail.
Our yardage projections give Mississippi State about 355 total yards to Oklahoma’s 325, with most of the difference coming on the ground: roughly 135 rushing yards for the Bulldogs and 105 for the Sooners. The passing-yard expectations are much closer, around 220 apiece. That points to a plausible route for Mississippi State to stay competitive through its running game, even against a defense we rate highly.
The important distinction is between gaining yards and finishing drives. Mississippi State showed last week that those can be very different things. Oklahoma’s own loss showed how turnovers can undo otherwise competitive play. Those are more useful questions for this spread than simply comparing the Bulldogs’ 4-2 record with the Sooners’ 3-3 mark.

What that means for the 44.5-point total
Oklahoma’s defensive strength and Mississippi State’s recent difficulty turning drives into points put pressure on scoring at a total of 44.5. Four of the Sooners’ six games in that 2026 comparison finished under their respective totals. But there’s a counterweight: we still give Mississippi State’s offense an A grade, and our yardage projections allow for a meaningful rebound from its shutout. The Bulldogs’ six-game comparison is evenly split between overs and unders.
Turnovers also complicate a low-scoring reading of this game. Kentucky scored directly off an interception last week; another giveaway could create points without a long drive. At this total, the distinction matters: sustained yardage offers one path to scoring, while takeaways can produce points even when an offense struggles to move the ball.
Oklahoma’s strongest case for separation is its defense paired with a cleaner offensive performance. Mississippi State’s projected rushing advantage gives it a way to resist that, but last week’s failed fourth-down possessions show why yardage alone isn’t enough. The most useful focus for bettors is whether Oklahoma protects its possessions and whether the Bulldogs turn their ground game into productive drives. Those factors connect the spread and scoring outlook more clearly than either team’s last final score.
