Iowa State’s running game disappeared at Arizona just as Oklahoma State’s offense was taking off against Colorado. That contrast makes the Cyclones’ response on the ground the central question in Ames. The Cowboys are 9.5-point favorites at DraftKings, but our projections give Iowa State a rushing advantage even as Oklahoma State holds the much larger passing outlook.
Iowa State needs its running game back
Arizona beat Iowa State 39-3 on Saturday, holding the Cyclones to 52 rushing yards on 31 carries and ending their 23-game streak of reaching 100 yards on the ground. Aiden Flora managed 36 yards on 12 carries. Iowa State finished with 221 total yards and converted just three of 14 third downs in the 39-3 defeat.
The Cyclones didn’t cross midfield in the second half. Their previous game was a 24-10 loss at BYU, so the offense arrives with two consecutive low-scoring results to address.
Our rushing projection offers a better outlook: about 174 yards for Iowa State, compared with 140 for Oklahoma State. Our grades put the Cowboys’ defense at C+ and the Cyclones’ defense at B. Iowa State has a plausible way to make this a more competitive game if it can regain useful ground production and avoid another series of stalled possessions.
Oklahoma State can attack through the air
The Cowboys beat Colorado 57-24 after outscoring the Buffaloes 34-0 in the second half. Drew Mestemaker threw for 386 yards and four touchdowns, Caleb Hawkins ran for 120 yards, and Oklahoma State finished with 598 total yards in the 57-24 win.
It wasn’t comfortable throughout. Colorado led 24-23 at halftime, while Oklahoma State had settled for three field goals. A fumble recovery at the Colorado 24 helped the Cowboys take the lead early in the third quarter; their next touchdown followed a 78-yard drive. They found points both from a short field and by moving the ball themselves.
Our passing projections favor Oklahoma State by a substantial amount: about 275 yards against 172 for Iowa State. The total-yardage outlook is roughly 415 for the Cowboys and 347 for the Cyclones. We also rate Oklahoma State’s offense higher, at B compared with Iowa State’s C+.
That passing contrast is the favorite’s strongest offensive argument. Iowa State’s rushing outlook gives it a different route, but it needs that production to keep Mestemaker’s attack from dictating the game. Oklahoma State has covered six straight games, including its 35-32 loss at Houston before the Colorado win, and is 5-2 outright this season.

A 57.5 total depends on Iowa State joining in
Oklahoma State’s last four games have gone Over, while four of Iowa State’s seven games this season have gone Under. The 57.5-point total puts the Cyclones’ offensive response alongside the Cowboys’ recent scoring surge.
Iowa State repeating its last two offensive performances would make a high-scoring exchange harder to sustain. Its projected rushing rebound gives that exchange a more credible route, particularly against Oklahoma State’s weaker defensive evaluation. The Cowboys’ latest win also showed how quickly a takeaway can change scoring opportunities.
There are counterweights to the scoring case. Iowa State has the stronger defensive grade, and Oklahoma State held Colorado scoreless after halftime despite allowing 24 points before the break. The Cowboys have shown both a vulnerable half and a commanding one; assuming only one of those versions would miss an important part of the matchup.
Oklahoma State’s passing strength and recent production give it the stronger overall case. Iowa State’s clearest response is on the ground, where our outlook is much healthier than its Arizona performance. The useful test is whether those rushing gains produce sustained drives and a real scoring contribution, rather than leaving the Cyclones dependent on their defense to absorb another busy night.
