Packers vs. Buccaneers Preview: Can Green Bay Clear a Field Goal?

Green Bay is laying more than a field goal on the road, but recent results don’t make the favorite an automatic sell. The Packers have the clearer offensive advantage in our grades and projections, while the Buccaneers’ path to keeping this close rests on an evenly graded defense, a comparable rushing outlook and better execution from an offense facing several personnel questions.

Green Bay’s advantage starts with the passing game

Our grades give the Packers an A- on offense, comfortably ahead of Tampa Bay’s C. Both defenses receive a B-, leaving one central matchup question: Can the Buccaneers’ defense do enough to offset the largest unit-level gap in the game?

Our projections put Green Bay at about 341 total yards and Tampa Bay at 291. Nearly all of that separation comes through the air. The Packers project for roughly 234 passing yards, compared with 184 for the Buccaneers, while the rushing outlook is nearly even at about 108 yards for Green Bay and 106 for Tampa Bay.

That balance gives the Buccaneers a plausible route to a competitive game. If they can keep the ground game involved and avoid obvious passing situations, their defense should have more opportunities to influence the pace. If Green Bay turns its passing edge into sustained drives, Tampa Bay will have a much harder time playing that kind of game.

Tampa Bay’s offense is the central uncertainty

The Buccaneers enter at 0-3 after a 23-16 loss to Minnesota in which they allowed six sacks and had promising plays erased by penalties. Jalon Daniels entered during the final minute of that defeat, and the quarterback matchup between Daniels and Jordan Love now adds another important contrast to the passing-game outlook.

Two prominent Tampa Bay skill players also appeared on the latest practice reports. Running back Bucky Irving was limited Wednesday by a glute injury, while wide receiver Chris Godwin Jr. participated Thursday while dealing with an ankle injury. Both were listed as questionable, and their roles make their availability worth monitoring as kickoff approaches.

What the 3.5-point spread is asking

The latest line makes Green Bay a 3.5-point road favorite. Neither team has rewarded spread bettors so far in 2026: the Packers and Buccaneers are both 0-3 against the spread through three games.

Our ratings are more emphatic about the scoring market, with a four-star total rating compared with two stars on the side. With the total sitting at 38.5, Tampa Bay’s uncertain offensive efficiency and the nearly even defensive grades matter to the broader scoring environment as well as the spread.

Final assessment

Green Bay owns the stronger supported case: the better offensive grade, a sizable projected passing advantage and roughly 50 more projected total yards. Tampa Bay’s counterweight is an evenly graded defense, home field and a rushing projection that’s essentially level with Green Bay’s.

The factor that matters most is whether Tampa Bay can produce enough efficient offense to prevent Love and the Packers from controlling the game through the air. The Buccaneers don’t need to match Green Bay yard for yard, but they do need to avoid the sacks, penalties and stalled possessions that undercut them against Minnesota.
