Milwaukee has a 103-win season and Jacob Misiorowski on its side. San Diego has a pitching staff that just held the Cubs to one run across a two-game Wild Card sweep. That’s the compelling tension in this NL Division Series opener: can the Padres keep another strong lineup quiet, or will the Brewers make San Diego chase the game against one of baseball’s toughest starters?
Misiorowski sets a demanding first test
Misiorowski finished the regular season with a major-league-leading 1.80 ERA and 252 strikeouts. He capped that season with two hits allowed over 5⅓ scoreless innings against St. Louis on September 27. Those numbers give Milwaukee’s case more substance than its record alone.
Our grades favor Milwaukee in both key units: an A- lineup and A pitching, compared with San Diego’s B+ lineup and B pitching. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado give the Padres a credible challenge at the plate, but our hits projections put San Diego at roughly six and Milwaukee at roughly eight. That leaves the Padres with fewer hitting opportunities to work with.
San Diego’s answer goes beyond Robbie Ray
Robbie Ray faces Misiorowski in Game 1. Their outs prop lines are 11.5 for Ray and 17.5 for Misiorowski. That gap points toward an important workload contrast: Milwaukee getting more length from its starter, with San Diego leaning more heavily on its relief group.

The Padres have just shown that approach can work. Five pitchers combined on a five-hitter in their 4-1 Wild Card clincher against Chicago on September 30, with Mason Miller finishing the save. San Diego won the opener 8-0, allowing just one run across the sweep. Both clubs have also won eight of their last 10 games, so this isn’t a hot underdog meeting a favorite that’s lost its rhythm.
Milwaukee also has a lineup concern: Joey Ortiz is day-to-day with a knee injury. MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy reported Friday that manager Pat Murphy expects Ortiz to be on the NLDS roster.
What Milwaukee’s price asks of bettors
DraftKings prices Milwaukee at -203 on the moneyline. The stronger grades and Misiorowski’s exceptional season help explain that substantial favorite’s price. San Diego’s recent pitching performance is the counterweight, especially its ability to keep getting outs after the starter exits.
Milwaukee brings the stronger season-long case, while San Diego’s sweep shows why starter length won’t tell the whole story. The pivotal stretch is the handoff from Ray to the Padres’ bullpen: keeping Milwaukee contained there would give San Diego’s bats time to work against Misiorowski. An early Brewers lead paired with a long outing from their ace would make that route much narrower.
