Panthers vs. Jets: Winnipeg’s close losses put its scoring under the spotlight

Winnipeg’s five-game losing streak looks rough, but every defeat has come by one goal. That makes Tuesday’s matchup with Florida less about a team getting overwhelmed and more about whether the Jets can find enough scoring to turn close games around. The Panthers are modest road favorites, yet their own uneven attack complicates the case for backing them to win another tight game.

Close games, not enough goals

The Jets have scored nine goals during those five losses, never more than three in a game. They’re 4-6 across their last 10 games, while Florida is 5-5. There’s a difference in recent results, but neither team brings a sustained run of wins into this matchup.

Winnipeg’s latest setback captures the frustration. The Jets lost 2-1 to Montreal in Sunday’s outdoor Heritage Classic despite putting 34 shots on net. That was a busy shooting night without much scoring reward. One game doesn’t establish a lasting finishing problem, but it shows why the losing streak can’t simply be blamed on a lack of attempts.

Florida, meanwhile, beat Chicago 3-2 on Sunday on Lars Eller’s late winner, ending a two-game skid. The Panthers had scored just once across the preceding losses at Ottawa and Pittsburgh. At DraftKings, their -130 moneyline price asks bettors to back a road favorite whose scoring has been unreliable too.

A low total with a meaningful counterweight

The sportsbook total is 5.5 goals. Winnipeg’s results help explain why that number deserves attention: eight of its 11 games this season have finished Under their respective totals. Flat one-unit Under bets across those games returned a historical profit of 4.44 units. Those results came at different lines and prices, but they describe how often the Jets’ games have stayed relatively quiet.

Our shot projections also suggest modest volume—about 28 shots for Florida and 26 for Winnipeg. That puts our expectation for the Jets well below Sunday’s 34-shot output. Florida does have a higher-scoring gear, though: the Panthers scored eight against Seattle and seven against Columbus within their last 10 games.

The recent goaltending results add another counterweight to the low-scoring case. If Akira Schmid and Clay Stevenson get the starts, Schmid brings an 87.2% save percentage across his last five appearances for Florida, while Stevenson has stopped 89.3% of shots across three appearances for Winnipeg this season. Those small samples leave room for improvement, but they also make modest shot projections a less reassuring argument for a low-scoring game at 5.5.

What matters most

Florida’s modest favorite status fits Winnipeg’s struggle to turn competitive games into wins. Still, the Panthers’ inconsistent scoring makes a clear advantage difficult to establish from recent results alone. Winnipeg’s biggest opportunity is a better return on its shots: another one- or two-goal night leaves little room for error, while improved scoring would put pressure on a Florida attack that has been anything but steady. The same tension matters for the total—restrained shooting volume supports a quieter game, but Florida’s scoring bursts and the goalies’ recent results keep that from being a comfortable assumption.
