Detroit didn’t need a huge scoring night from Cade Cunningham to stay unbeaten Friday. That balance gets another test against Philadelphia: the Pistons will be without Jalen Duren, Ausar Thompson is questionable, and the 3-0 Sixers just had three players score at least 26 points. With Philadelphia a 2.5-point favorite at DraftKings, the interesting question is whether Detroit’s supporting cast can keep producing against another team with several ways to score.
Detroit has already found help beyond Cunningham
John Collins scored 23 points and Paul Reed added 19 off the bench as Detroit beat Miami 128-111 on Friday. Duncan Robinson contributed 17, while Cunningham finished with 16. That’s an encouraging example of the Pistons finding scoring throughout the rotation rather than depending on one player to carry the night.
The personnel picture is less encouraging. Duren has been ruled out with a right hamstring strain, and Thompson is questionable with an ankle injury. Both left Friday’s game early. Reed’s productive outing gives Detroit an encouraging contribution to build on as its depth gets tested again.
Our team projections give Detroit about 28 assists compared with Philadelphia’s 25, pointing toward more assisted baskets for the Pistons. There’s a counterweight, though: we also project roughly 14 Detroit turnovers against 12 for the Sixers. Detroit’s ability to share the ball matters most if it can avoid giving those possessions back.
Philadelphia brings scoring options—and a quick turnaround
Joel Embiid had 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in Philadelphia’s 127-116 win over Milwaukee on Saturday. Jaylen Brown scored 27 and Tyrese Maxey added 26. The AP reported in that recap that LeBron James was expected to play Sunday after sitting out Saturday for lower back pain management.
That gives Philadelphia a strong offensive case, although this is its second game in as many nights. Sunday’s tip is at 7:30 p.m. EDT, exactly 24 hours after Saturday’s scheduled start, and Embiid played 36 minutes against Milwaukee. It’s a demanding turnaround after a productive night, even if that alone doesn’t tell us how the Sixers will perform.
Our grades capture the matchup’s competing strengths: we rate Philadelphia’s offense B+ compared with Detroit’s B, but give the Pistons the stronger defensive assessment, A- against C+. Philadelphia’s scoring options are the clearest challenge to Detroit; the Pistons’ defensive evaluation is the main counterweight to treating the home favorite as an easy choice.

How the scoring outlook fits 227.5
The 227.5-point total brings two different early-season pictures into focus. Detroit scored 121 and 128 in its first two games, both of which went over their respective totals. Philadelphia’s first two games went under before Saturday’s higher-scoring win. Those are small samples, and all three Sixers games carried higher totals than today’s 227.5, so their two unders need that context.
Detroit’s balanced scoring and Philadelphia’s productive trio give the matchup scoring potential, especially against the Sixers’ lower defensive grade. Detroit’s stronger defensive assessment pulls the other way, while its injuries and Philadelphia’s quick turnaround complicate the comparison. At 227.5, the latest scoring outbursts make a compelling case for offensive production, but the Pistons’ defensive assessment and the Sixers’ workload are meaningful reasons not to simply carry those performances forward.
Philadelphia’s strongest case is its range of scoring options. Detroit’s is a combination of shared production and the better defensive evaluation, now tested by Duren’s absence and Thompson’s uncertain availability. In a narrow-spread matchup, Detroit’s projected turnover disadvantage is the pressure point: its supporting scoring has more value if the Pistons can protect enough possessions to make use of it.
