Rams vs. Raiders preview: Can Los Angeles turn its advantages into results?

The Rams have the stronger matchup on paper, but the Raiders have been much better at rewarding bettors. Los Angeles’ offensive advantages run up against a familiar problem: turning promising drives into points. The Rams are 2-4, while Las Vegas is 3-3 despite losing three straight, and their latest losses offer very different clues about whether Los Angeles can deliver as a favorite.

The Rams have an opening—and something to prove

Los Angeles is a 3.5-point favorite at DraftKings. Our analysis gives the Rams an A on offense against a Raiders defense graded C+, the clearest unit mismatch in this game. With Matthew Stafford directing the offense, our projections put Los Angeles at roughly 390 total yards, compared with about 290 for Las Vegas.

Last Sunday showed why that advantage still needs to translate onto the field. The Rams lost 18-16 to Arizona, managing 286 yards. A lost fumble and a turnover on downs ended two fourth-quarter possessions in Cardinals territory. Stafford threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns, but Los Angeles needed a late touchdown drive just to briefly take the lead.

The recent spread results reinforce that execution concern. The Rams covered once across their past six games this season. Las Vegas has covered five times in six games this season, producing a historical profit of 3.71 units from flat one-unit spread bets. The Raiders’ record tells one story; their ability to stay within the number tells another.

Las Vegas has a passing-game counterweight

Kirk Cousins gives the Raiders a credible way to challenge that matchup gap. He threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns in last Sunday’s 33-30 loss to Buffalo. Tre Tucker caught both scoring passes and finished with 97 receiving yards, while Brock Bowers added 70. Las Vegas scored enough to stay close even as its defense struggled.

Bowers is a key name among the injury updates affecting that passing matchup. Sam Warren of The Athletic reported that Bowers, dealing with hamstring/calf issues, was in uniform and warming up before Thursday’s practice; that observation leaves his participation level and Sunday availability unresolved. For the Rams, Adam Grosbard of The Orange County Register reported that cornerback Trent McDuffie missed Wednesday’s practice with a groin injury. Los Angeles also placed defensive lineman Kobie Turner on injured reserve Wednesday with a groin injury.

We still rate the Rams’ defense A- against a Raiders offense graded B. But Cousins’ latest performance supplies a concrete counterweight to those grades: Las Vegas has just shown it can generate a productive passing day against a winning opponent.

What matters at a total of 48.5

The scoring case starts with the Raiders’ defense. Las Vegas has allowed 30, 45 and 33 points across its three-game losing streak, and its past four games have all gone over their respective totals. Against that backdrop, the Rams’ strong offensive grade gives Los Angeles a promising scoring matchup at the current total of 48.5.

The counterweight is Los Angeles’ uneven output. The Rams scored 34 against Buffalo before falling to 16 against Arizona, and their past six games this season split evenly between overs and unders. Our strong assessment of the Rams’ defense also challenges the idea that Las Vegas’ recent high-scoring games will simply carry over. Bowers’ practice situation adds uncertainty around an important part of the Raiders’ passing attack. The more useful focus at 48.5 is whether the Rams finish drives and Cousins can sustain last week’s production against this defense—not simply whether the Raiders extend their over streak.

The takeaway

Los Angeles has the stronger unit matchups and the larger yardage projection, making its offense the clearest source of opportunity in this game. The Raiders’ spread results and Cousins’ productive outing keep that advantage from being the whole story. For the Rams to make their favorite status convincing, they need to turn drives into points rather than repeat the costly stalled possessions against Arizona. At 48.5, that execution matters alongside a separate question: how much of Las Vegas’ passing success carries over against a Rams defense we rate highly.
