Toronto’s trip to Milwaukee looks inviting on the standings page, but the Raptors arrive with a problem that a 1–7 opponent won’t automatically solve. They’ve allowed at least 118 points in four straight games, and their latest loss swung on a disastrous third quarter. The Bucks, meanwhile, nearly erased a huge deficit in Boston before falling short. Friday’s matchup asks whether Toronto can sustain its stronger defensive profile long enough to build a lead, rather than let another game turn into a shooting contest.
The third quarter tells two different stories
Toronto lost 128–109 in Denver after being outscored 41–15 in the third quarter. The shooting change was dramatic: the Raptors made nine of 19 threes before halftime, then only three of 15 afterward. RJ Barrett still finished with 22 points, his seventh game with at least 20 in eight appearances this season, according to AP’s recap on ESPN.
Barrett has given Toronto a steady scoring contribution, but an early burst of threes wasn’t enough in Denver. The Raptors need offense that holds up after halftime and stops that keep a cold stretch from becoming a runaway loss. Their last four opponents scored 121, 131, 118 and 128 points; the defensive concern extends beyond one bad quarter.
Milwaukee’s third quarter went the other way in its 109–102 loss at Boston. Tyler Herro scored 18 of his 25 points in the period, helping the Bucks work back from a 21-point halftime deficit. They briefly took the lead in the fourth, but Boston outscored them 12–5 over the final three minutes, as AP reported via ESPN. Herro’s burst gave Milwaukee a chance; sustaining the recovery proved harder.
Toronto’s favorite role comes with questions
DraftKings lists Toronto as a 6.5-point road favorite. The Raptors are 4–4 both outright and against the spread this season, while Milwaukee is 1–7 outright and 3–5 against the spread. Toronto has lost three of its last four games, so the gap in season records doesn’t describe a favorite arriving in settled form.
Our team grades make the defensive matchup Toronto’s clearest relative strength: the Raptors carry a B on defense against Milwaukee’s C. On offense, however, Toronto is D+ and Milwaukee is C. Toronto’s relative strength is therefore at the end that has recently let it down. To make its favorite status count, the Raptors need that defensive advantage to show up for longer than a good stretch.

Scottie Barnes is questionable with a groin injury in Thursday night’s report. He had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists in Denver, making his availability relevant to several parts of Toronto’s game. The starting groups remain unconfirmed, and his status leaves Toronto’s options unsettled.
Milwaukee’s perimeter shooting offers another counterweight. Our three-point projections put the Bucks at about 15 makes and Toronto at about 10. If Milwaukee reaches that expectation, it would have a way to pressure the favorite even without matching Toronto’s defensive grade. Herro’s scoring burst in Boston shows why the Raptors can’t count on the Bucks staying quiet for an entire half.
A total with competing recent signals
The total is 230.5 points. Toronto’s last five games have all gone over their respective totals, including the loss in Denver at the same scoring threshold as tonight. That run has included wins and losses: high scores haven’t necessarily meant Toronto was in control.
Milwaukee’s latest two games provide the counterargument. The Bucks scored 100 at Minnesota and 102 at Boston, with both games staying under their historical totals. Their Boston comeback was compelling, but the final combined score was only 211. Toronto’s recent defensive trouble and Milwaukee’s recent offensive limits pull this matchup in different directions.
Toronto’s stronger defensive profile is the clearest path to a steadier second half, but four straight games of heavy concessions make it something to watch for rather than assume. Milwaukee showed in Boston that a scoring burst can change the game quickly. For the Raptors, protecting a lead means giving that burst fewer chances to start, especially with Barnes’ availability unresolved.
