Scottie Barnes scored 41 points Friday. Luka Doncic scored 37. Neither performance produced a win, which gives Sunday’s Raptors–Lakers matchup a useful starting point: both teams need more than another huge night from their leading scorer. Toronto has just seen how quickly an opponent’s three-point shooting can change a game, while Los Angeles is trying to recover from an offense that stalled after a spectacular opening quarter.
Toronto’s challenge extends beyond Barnes
Barnes made 19 of 34 shots before fouling out in Toronto’s 121-114 loss to Orlando. Immanuel Quickley added 17 points, and Jakob Poeltl finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Toronto briefly moved ahead in the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold the lead.
The swing in Orlando’s shooting was striking. After making 10 of 35 three-point attempts in Wednesday’s loss to Toronto, the Magic hit 18 of 34 on Friday. Desmond Bane made six threes. The Lakers present a new challenge, but that swing puts defending the perimeter high on Toronto’s list for Sunday.
Our three-point projections put the Lakers at about 13 made threes and the Raptors at about 10. That makes the three-point line a useful place to watch this matchup develop. Making the Lakers work for their outside shots would ease the pressure on Barnes and the rest of Toronto’s offense to keep up.
The Lakers need their offense to last
Los Angeles led Golden State 38-15 after one quarter Friday, then lost 112-95. Doncic scored 21 of his 37 points in that opening period and made five first-quarter threes. The Warriors erased the entire quarter-ending deficit by halftime.
That leaves an uncomfortable contrast: the Lakers showed how dangerous their offense can be, but finished with only 57 points over the last three quarters. They also scored 103 in their previous game, a win over the Clippers. Earlier this season, they put up 129 against Portland and 132 at Utah. There is plenty of scoring potential, but the last two games have fallen well short of it.
Our grades rate the Lakers’ offense A- and Toronto’s defense B. That sets up an intriguing matchup: a highly rated attack facing a defense we also respect, with both coming off results that exposed something to improve. Lakers forward Ziaire Williams is questionable with a foot issue for Sunday’s game, according to Law Murray of The Athletic.

Reading the spread and scoring threshold
The DraftKings spread makes Los Angeles a 3.5-point favorite. The Lakers’ 4-2 record gives them the better start, but they’ve covered three of those six spreads. Toronto is 3-2 both outright and against the spread. That distinction matters when assessing a home favorite: the Lakers have found ways to win more often than they’ve cleared the handicap.
At a total of 227.5, the central tension is between the offensive ceiling and the consistency needed to reach it. Toronto’s two games against Orlando produced 129 and 114 Raptors points, while the Lakers’ last two scoring outputs were much quieter. Doncic’s hot opening and our projected three-point production give Los Angeles a path to more offense; Toronto’s ability to limit that outside scoring is the counterweight. Friday’s results make it hard to treat a big individual performance as sufficient on either side.
The Lakers bring the stronger offensive evaluation, but sustaining that attack is the test. For Toronto, improving the perimeter defense would give Barnes and the rest of the offense a more manageable task than the one they faced Friday. The three-point line connects those tests: outside production can help Los Angeles sustain its scoring, while forcing it to find points elsewhere would make Toronto’s job easier. Another huge individual night would be welcome, but both teams have just seen how much the rest of the performance matters.
