Detroit got 32 saves from Daniil Tarasov against Vegas and still left with a 2–1 loss. That is the problem the Red Wings carry to Denver: keeping a game close has limited value if they cannot provide enough offense. Colorado has scored only twice in each of its last two games, too, making Saturday a test of two attacks trying to respond from very different starting points.
Detroit needs more support for its goalie
AP reported that Anton Johansson put Detroit ahead in the third period Thursday, but Vegas answered twice to win 2–1, scoring the winner with 1:42 left. Tarasov stopped 32 shots. Detroit has managed only three goals across its last two games, both losses.
Saturday’s goalie assignment is unsettled. John Gibson is projected to start, but he remains unconfirmed. Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reported that Gibson practiced Friday while dealing with a lower-body issue. That report does not clear him for Saturday. The change from Thursday’s starter remains a possibility, with Detroit still needing more scoring support whoever plays.
The offensive task is demanding regardless. Sharpest Bets grades Colorado’s team defense an A and Detroit’s offense a C. Our shot projections put the Avalanche at 33 and the Red Wings at roughly 29. That points to a possible volume advantage for Colorado, without telling us how dangerous those shots will be. Detroit’s challenge is to make its own opportunities count against the stronger defensive grade.
Colorado’s production has dipped below its pedigree
The Avalanche’s A+ offensive grade stands in contrast to their latest two results: a 7–2 loss at Columbus followed by a 3–2 overtime loss to Nashville. Before those games, Colorado scored five in each of three straight wins. The recent downturn is real, but it follows a stretch that showed considerably more scoring.
AP reported that Colorado went scoreless on three power plays against Nashville. Predators goalie Justus Annunen made 30 saves and his teammates blocked 25 shots. Jaden Schwartz and Parker Kelly scored for Colorado before Nashville won on an overtime power play.
That leaves two useful questions for the Avalanche: can they turn their shot volume into better scoring returns, and can they get more from their power-play opportunities? Neither a strong grade nor a projected shot advantage answers those questions by itself.
The projected goalie matchup has Mackenzie Blackwood in net for Colorado, also unconfirmed. Our logs give him a .893 save percentage across his five most recent appearances: four starts and one relief outing. That is a counterweight to Colorado’s strong defensive grade, although Detroit still has to turn its opportunities into goals.

The price favors Colorado; the total needs both attacks
DraftKings’ moneyline lists Colorado at -225 and Detroit at +185, with a total of 6.5 in Saturday morning’s snapshot. Colorado has six wins, one regulation loss and two overtime losses at home. That record and the grade matchup explain the favorite’s appeal, but the Avalanche still need to restore their scoring to make the most of those advantages. Detroit’s route to a stronger challenge starts with producing more than it has in its two losses.
Colorado’s games have gone over in 12 of 17 this season; Detroit’s have done so in nine of 17. Those histories sit alongside the immediate counterweight of both teams scoring only twice or fewer in their latest two games. For the total, the issue is whether Colorado resumes its earlier production and whether Detroit contributes more than it has in its two losses.
Sharpest Bets assigns three stars to both the side and total. The matchup turns on what each team does with its opportunities: Colorado needs better returns from its pressure and power plays, while Detroit needs enough offense to keep good goaltending from going to waste. The projected shot gap frames that test; the finishing, and who is confirmed in net, will give it meaning.
