Cincinnati just shut out Atlanta, but repeating that result against Chris Sale is a much tougher assignment. The Braves have the stronger record and a substantial edge in the latest moneyline, while Ronald Acuña Jr.’s absence keeps an Atlanta rebound from feeling automatic.
A very different starting-pitcher matchup
The Reds won Tuesday’s opener 4-0 behind six scoreless innings from Brandon Williamson. Elly De La Cruz homered, stole his 29th base and added an RBI single, while Dane Myers and Eugenio Suárez also went deep, according to the AP.
The confirmed starters and lineups make Wednesday’s shift clear. Sale enters at 14-9 with a 2.18 ERA, while Cincinnati counters with Andrew Abbott at 6-11 with a 4.70 ERA. That contrast helps explain why the 92-65 Braves are priced so heavily against the 73-84 Reds despite what happened one night earlier.
The lineup context matters, too. Acuña is out of Atlanta’s lineup after injuring his lower leg Tuesday. The Braves still have Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, Michael Harris II and Austin Riley grouped in the middle of the order, but removing Acuña changes the shape of a lineup that was held scoreless in the opener.
Why Atlanta still owns a sizable market edge
Atlanta is -277 and Cincinnati is +222 on the latest DraftKings moneyline. The broader form favors Atlanta more than Tuesday’s result alone: the Braves are 6-4 across their last 10 games, while the Reds are 4-6.
Our projections also give Atlanta the stronger expected hitting profile, with about eight hits and 14 total bases compared with roughly seven hits and 11 total bases for Cincinnati. Acuña’s absence adds risk, but Atlanta’s remaining lineup still projects to create the deeper challenge.
The total is 7.5, with the under priced at -122, but the recent scoring signals are mixed. Seven of Atlanta’s last 10 games went over and one pushed, while Cincinnati had three overs, five unders and two pushes. Sale and the missing Atlanta leadoff threat support a lower-scoring case, but the Braves’ projected edge in hits and total bases keeps the outlook from being one-sided.

Final assessment
Atlanta’s strongest case starts with Sale controlling a Cincinnati lineup that has been inconsistent despite Tuesday’s productive night. The counterweight is that the Reds have already created damage in this series, and the Braves must respond without Acuña. The matchup should turn on whether Sale stops Cincinnati from building early momentum and gives Atlanta’s remaining bats enough room to convert their projected production edge into runs.
