South Alabama vs. Kentucky: Can the Jaguars’ Ground Game Keep It Close?

Kentucky turned a halftime tie at Texas A&M into a commanding lead in one quarter. South Alabama comes in after rushing for 266 yards against Ohio. The 20.5-point spread makes the tension clear: can the Jaguars keep moving the ball on the ground long enough to stop Kentucky from pulling away?

South Alabama’s path runs through its backfield

Four Jaguars backs combined for 266 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a 41-36 win over Ohio last Saturday. It wasn’t one runner carrying the whole offense, and that gives South Alabama more than one way to sustain a drive. Our rushing-yard projection puts the Jaguars around 180 yards against Kentucky. If they turn those yards into long possessions, they can make a big spread harder for the Wildcats to cover.

There’s a substantial obstacle to that plan. Our grades give Kentucky’s defense an A- and South Alabama’s offense a C. The Jaguars also allowed 36 points to Ohio, so running effectively won’t necessarily keep Kentucky from scoring. South Alabama needs its ground game to do more than produce yards; it needs to keep the Wildcats’ offense off the field and finish drives.

How Kentucky can create separation

Kentucky scored three third-quarter touchdowns in its 31-21 win at Texas A&M, outgaining the Aggies 196 yards to 20 in that period. A passing touchdown broke the halftime tie, and two rushing scores extended the lead. That mix matters here: the Wildcats don’t have to rely on one route to a quick scoring burst.

Our projections put Kentucky near 235 passing yards and South Alabama near 165. That gap gives the Wildcats a way to answer even if the Jaguars run well. Still, Kentucky’s impressive quarter last week came in a 10-point win, not a runaway final margin. Against a 20.5-point spread, building a lead and maintaining it are different challenges.

Where the scoring could come from

The 54.5-point total has a plausible path through both offenses. South Alabama’s win over Ohio reached 77 points, with the Jaguars’ rushing touchdowns doing much of the work. Kentucky’s win at Texas A&M finished at 52, despite that three-touchdown third quarter. One high-scoring Jaguars game and one explosive Wildcats quarter offer reasons to examine the total, but neither settles how these teams will score against each other.

South Alabama’s best route is steady rushing that turns into points, not just time off the clock. Kentucky can change the pace if its passing game creates quick gains or its defense stops those drives before they reach scoring range. How often the Jaguars finish possessions is likely to shape both the scoring and the margin.

Kentucky’s stronger grades and more productive passing projection give it the clearer path to separation. South Alabama’s backfield is the strongest counterweight, especially if it can string together scoring drives. The matchup may hinge less on whether the Jaguars gain rushing yards than on what they get from those yards.
