South Carolina vs. Alabama: Can the Gamecocks Slow the Tide?

Alabama has the higher ceiling in this matchup, but covering 12.5 points is a more interesting challenge than simply winning the game. The Crimson Tide just showed how quickly their offense can erase a poor start, while South Carolina is trying to regroup after letting a 16-point lead disappear. The spread may come down to which team cleans up its recent mistakes first.

Alabama’s explosiveness comes with a warning

Alabama moved to 3-0 by rallying from 15 points down for a 50-36 win over Florida State. Keelon Russell threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns, ran for another score and led an attack that finished with 615 yards. The Crimson Tide scored touchdowns on five consecutive possessions across the second and third quarters.

That performance also showed why laying a big number isn’t automatic. Florida State produced 13 plays of at least 15 yards and converted 8 of 15 third downs. Alabama eventually took control, but those defensive lapses helped keep the game competitive well into the fourth quarter.

Our grades still show a clear overall edge for the Crimson Tide. Alabama carries an A overall grade, with an A on defense and an A- on offense, while South Carolina is graded B in all three categories. The gap is real, although Alabama’s strongest football hasn’t always arrived from the opening kick.

South Carolina has to turn opportunities into touchdowns

The Gamecocks’ 41-34 loss to Mississippi State followed a frustrating pattern. South Carolina drove deep into Bulldogs territory four times early but came away with one touchdown and three field goals. After building a 16-0 advantage, the Gamecocks were outscored 41-7 over the next 24 minutes.

LaNorris Sellers finished with 282 passing yards and two touchdowns, but his two interceptions inside South Carolina territory led to a Mississippi State field goal and touchdown. The Gamecocks showed enough passing production to challenge an Alabama defense that just allowed repeated explosive plays. Their tougher task is sustaining it without the turnovers and stalled drives.

What matters against the spread

DraftKings has Alabama favored by 12.5 points. Across each team’s last 10 games, Alabama went 7-3 outright and 6-4 against the spread, while South Carolina went 3-7 outright and 4-6 against the spread. Those results cross seasons, so they’re useful context rather than a forecast.

Our team projections make the expected production gap more modest than the grades do. Alabama projects for roughly 370 total yards and South Carolina for about 335. Most of that separation comes through the air, where the Crimson Tide project for around 250 passing yards compared with 215 for the Gamecocks. The rushing outlook is much closer at approximately 125 yards for Alabama and 120 for South Carolina.

That puts efficiency at the center of the spread discussion. Alabama’s explosive-play potential, stronger grades and home-field setting support the case for separation. South Carolina’s counter is an offense capable of moving the ball against a defense that just allowed too many long gains and third-down conversions. The biggest question is whether the Gamecocks can finish drives and protect the ball well enough to make that narrower projected yardage gap matter.
