Portland built a 16-point lead against the Lakers on Friday, then lost it during a third-quarter collapse. Sustaining good stretches will be the challenge against San Antonio’s seven-game winning streak, with both clubs playing for the second consecutive night.
Portland has offense to challenge the streak
AP reported that Deni Avdija finished with 22 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds, and Damian Lillard also scored 22 in Portland’s 124–118 loss at Los Angeles. The Lakers scored 17 straight points in the third quarter, with Luka Doncic finishing the night on 53. Portland fought back but never got closer than four down the stretch.
The early lead and late recovery showed Portland could create offense. Avdija’s passing and Lillard’s scoring give the Blazers ways to challenge San Antonio; the problem Friday was sustaining that production when the game turned.
One area to watch is possession control. Our turnover projections put Portland at roughly 17 against about 12 for San Antonio. That forecast is a separate concern from Friday’s drought: giving away more possessions would make it harder to keep pace with the Spurs. It doesn’t establish why the Lakers’ run happened.
Wembanyama has help around him
AP reported that Victor Wembanyama had 30 points and 14 rebounds in Friday’s 124–109 win at Sacramento. Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell and Dylan Harper each scored 19, and San Antonio made 33 of 42 free throws.
That support makes Portland’s defensive task broader than containing Wembanyama. Three other scorers reached 19, while the free-throw line supplied a substantial part of San Antonio’s total. Portland needs to limit those extra opportunities as well as handle the Spurs’ main scorer; Friday’s 42 attempts need not repeat for foul discipline to matter.
Both starting lineups remain unconfirmed for the second game on consecutive nights. The schedule alone doesn’t establish a rest decision or a change in minutes.

The winning streak and the spread tell different stories
DraftKings’ spread favors San Antonio by 5.5 points, with a total of 226.5 in Saturday morning’s snapshot. The Spurs are 7–2 outright but 3–6 against the spread this season. The prices behind those results matter: San Antonio was a double-digit favorite in every game of its current seven-game winning streak. Its ATS record therefore describes a much larger hurdle during that run than Saturday’s number.
Portland is 6–2 outright and 5–3 against the spread. That is a credible early record for a home underdog, even after Friday’s loss, and a counterweight to viewing the Spurs’ streak as the whole matchup.
The total also needs more than a glance at Friday’s scores. Six of San Antonio’s nine games have finished under, while Portland’s eight games are split evenly between overs and unders. Both Friday games went over totals of 231.5, a higher threshold than Saturday’s. The season under record supplies context, but San Antonio’s opportunities at the line and Portland’s ability to keep its offense moving offer a more specific test of 226.5.
Sharpest Bets gives the side three stars and the total two. Portland has shown enough scoring and playmaking to make this a test of consistency. Its chances of sustaining a challenge improve if it protects possessions and avoids feeding San Antonio at the foul line. For the Spurs, the question is whether their scoring support keeps the offense productive when those extra opportunities are harder to find.
